SCHOOL NUTRITION NEWSLETTER
message from the director
Today is Veteran's Day and we show our thanks and appreciation to the men and women who have and those who are now safeguarding our freedom. Yesterday was also the United States Marine Corps' 247th birthday. The Marines were born out of a Philadelphia tavern during the Revolutionary War in 1775. I think about my larger than life late stepdad whenever I hear the word Marine. He was a career officer and did three tours in Vietnam. His stories spoke of dedication, bravery, true grit and the occasional geisha girl. Thank you, Louie! I know you have someone in your family to thank, too. Interestingly enough, the United States Department of Defense continues to safeguard the health of future soldiers by administering the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program in schools. It was a matter of national security during World War II when millions of recruits were turned away, unable to serve due to health problems related to poor nutrition. We participate in this program and receive weekly produce deliveries from "Kentucky" at the high school. This program is administered through the Defense Logistics Agency with military precision. I know, because if I'm late receipting an invoice, I receive a personal call from Washington. At the end of the day, remember that freedom is worth defending because it can be taken away. We are indebted to all those who fight the good fight and to the millions who have made the ultimate sacrifice.
With gratitude,
Kathy
