Hello STORM Families!
Happy New Year and welcome to a new decade!
As you probably know, the last weeks of December 2019 were difficult both for Squalicum and for our school district. We thank everyone who reached out with support. We are so fortunate to have a district and community who responds in a such a caring, devoted and sustained manner. Watching district employees and community members wrap around students, staff and families during challenging times exemplifies the Bellingham Promise.
We are very happy to usher in a new calendar year and look forward to heading into sunnier days in 2020. Your SQHS staff were excited to return to school and see our students. In speaking with students, many of them were ready and excited to return to school as well.
We are heading into the end of the semester push. Please help us remind students that time management, organization and communication are all important variables which impact stress and anxiety.
If you have questions and/or concerns regarding your student's progress and growth in a particular course, please reach out and communicate with our teachers, counselors, and administrators. Students are also encouraged to take advantage of our after school tutorials. Tutorials are Monday through Thursday in room B216 from 3:30 PM to 4:15 PM. Please encourage students to advocate for themselves by communicating with teachers and taking advantage of their STORM time.
Our finals schedule is posted and in support of our students, we are also offering our "5 Days of Finals, Food, Focus and Fun" from 3:15 to 4:15 pm in the library. We will offer different snacks each day and provide tutors for students before finals.
As I write this, I look out the window and see the sun. I ask myself if I had read the wrong weather forecast. Moving back to the Pacific Northwest has been amazing, however, this week has been a good reminder of the variety of weather we experience and the challenge of accurately predicting it. The forecast is suggesting snow in our near future and I cross my fingers for an inaccurate forecast in order to avoid snow days. In the event we experience inclement weather, please be sure to check our district's weather procedures and snow routes.
For your reference, here is a list of upcoming dates to remember:

Harvest of the Month for January
Apples are the Harvest of the Month for January.
Always a favorite, apples are a bountiful crop in Washington state; in fact Washington grows 60% of all fresh apples eaten in the United States. Apples, often local ones, are a staple on the school salad bars. Be sure to grab one for your pocket as you go through the lunch line.
For more about apples and featured recipes, visit the Whatcom Farm to School website.
