Principal's Pen
We are excited to see you at Parent-Student-Teacher conferences next week! Please prepare for conferences by following these suggestions:
- Watch for a reminder email from SignUp Genius two days before your conference.
- Be prompt or early for your assigned conference time.
- Please bring your child to the conference.
- The conference time will pass quickly. Help the teacher keep your conversation to 15 minutes. The teacher will want to give the next family their time as well.
- In advance, write down any questions you have. Bring them to the conference.
- There are several opportunities while you are at Ridgeway for your conference. (Even if you have a zoom conference, you can stop by during the conference times.)
- Visit the Book Fair in the media center. All students get to put their name in a drawing for free book boxes, no purchase is necessary.
- Admire the art displayed in the media center hallway and basement level.
- Claim items in the Lost-n-Found.
- Check out our student attendance bulletin board outside of the music room. As of last week, 94.2% of our Ridgeway students have attended school 90% of the time or more.
Second Steps
Over the next few weeks, Second Step lessons focus on managing emotions. We want our students to have self-awareness and self-management to understand and manage their emotions. We all have a lot of different feelings. Some of them are comfortable, and some are uncomfortable, and that is okay! Key parts of the lessons today are:
- When you have strong feelings, it’s hard to think clearly.
- When you feel empathy for someone else having strong feelings, compassion is a good way to show you care.
- Staying in control of your emotions and actions helps you get along better with others.
Families can help at home by identifying physical clues that help us name our feelings. For example, being embarrassed might feel like; our face gets hot, our knees are wobbly, and we feel a little sick to our stomach. Families can also identify and name strong feelings as they occur. Other family members can demonstrate care and helping behaviors when they notice strong feelings.
