Civil War Battles and our Civil War Simulation
Welcome back from Spring Break! Yesterday we started class by participating in a gallery walk of our various student projects before they took them home. Then we completed a quick overview activity on the major battles of the Civil War before classmates were put into groups to work on a battle newscast project. The overview activity involved reading a short summary of the main battles, then selecting the correct emoji and correct emoji order to retell the battle details. It was a fantastic way to get them to read for details! For this newscast project students will be working with the AIM students in their social studies block (since social studies is spending a few weeks on the Civil War we collaborated together and next week AIM students will be coming to AIM during their social studies block to work on the newscast instead of relearning what we have studied all year)! This project will require groups to retell the details of one particular battle from the point of view of both sides, analyze the battle strategies etc., in a newscast format. In the afternoon we launched our Civil War simulation by selecting names, backgrounds (former slave, farmer, professional etc.,),regiments and designing their flag. Each week we will participate in a scenario (they love this game) and by the end we will extend the game by having the class write new scenarios based on their battle newscasts.
