PHS Upcoming Events
Week of January 20th, 2020
Dear PHS Families,
The end of the second marking period and the Fall Semester (January 24th) is quickly approaching. Please speak with your student and check SchoolTool to make sure that all assignments have been completed and returned. Also, please contact your child’s teachers or the guidance counselor if you have any questions.
School will be closed on Monday, January 20th, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
On Tuesday, January 21st, Potsdam High School will not be holding classes, as we will be administering the English Regents Exam (11th grade students) beginning at 8:00 am in the gymnasium. Additionally, several students have registered to retake the Living Environment Regents Exam at 12:00 pm. Only students participating in these exams need to report to school on January 21st. Classes will resume on Wednesday, January 22nd (Day 6). Seaway Tech students who would like to make up time at Seaway Tech may do so on January 21st, as long as the proper paperwork is completed and you provide your own transportation.
During the month of January, Ms. White, Ms. Hewlett, and Mr. Dinan will be meeting individually with 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students to complete preliminary course registration for the 2020-2021 school year. Getting accurate numbers for classes based on actual student interests and intentions helps tremendously with the schedule planning process for both students and staff at PHS and ensures that selections are appropriate for an individual student’s graduation pathway. Parents and students will then have access to the student’s course selections in Schooltool and will be able to discuss and make changes with their counselor on an individual basis as usual through the spring.
In preparation for those conversations with students, it would be helpful if students and parents could discuss preliminary plans for classes and options after graduation also. Below are links to the course offerings for next year, this year's course catalog, and an overview of the current graduation requirements and options. Counselors will be discussing all of this with you and your student, but you may find it helpful to be informed in advance. Please don't hesitate to contact your student's counselor with any questions.
Any Potsdam High School students who participate in school-sponsored athletics and extracurricular activities are expected to follow the district's Extracurricular Code of Conduct. At the start of each school year, this Board of Education policy, along with the Student Code of Conduct and academic expectations, are reviewed as Mr. Wilson (Dean of Students & Athletic Director) and I meet with each class. Additionally, the Extracurricular Code of Conduct is posted on the Potsdam Central website and is reviewed with athletes at the beginning of each season. With the start of the Spring Semester, extracurricular advisors will also be reviewing this policy and school expectations with students. Please take a few minutes to read over this document to become familiar with eligibility standards, reasons for ineligibility, violations/consequences, and application of the policy.
The PHS Winter Ball Semi-Formal will be held on Saturday, February 8th from 8:00-11:00 pm. The cost is $12.00 per person. Dance Guest Passes are available in the Main Office and are due by February 5th. Please contact Mrs. Danielle Wilson, Junior Class Advisor, with any questions.
The St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES is offering the SAT/ACT Workshop to high school juniors who plan to take the SAT and/or ACT this spring. Classes will be at the SLL BOCES Educational Services Center, 40 W. Main St., on seven Saturdays or Sundays starting February 29th or March 1st. Classes are 2 1/2 hours. Registration materials are available at the guidance office and online at https://satactworkshop.weebly.com/. Students must register through their guidance counselors before February 6th. Our district participates in this BOCES service; therefore, it is FREE for Potsdam High School juniors.
Thank you for supporting Potsdam High School through the Price Chopper "Tools for Schools" program. We earned 94,933 points this year! We will use these to acquire materials for our classrooms. Can't make it to the game? All Potsdam Modified, JV, and Varsity athletic contests scheduled for the turf field or the high school gym are available through live video stream or video on demand on the NFHS Network. A subscription is required to watch the live stream or the VOD can be viewed for free a short time after the conclusion of the contest. Please contact Mr. Wilson (mwilson@potsdam.k12.ny.us) in the Athletics Office with any questions.
