News From Our 5th Grade Classroom 9/19/14
What's Happening in the Classroom
Subjects
In math, we will have our Unit 1 Test on Wednesday, September 24th. Your child will receive a study guide on Tuesday and we will review it that day in class. Your child will be able to use their math journal during the test.
Your child now has access to "Think Through Math". This online program provides math lessons on your child's math level. Your child can complete these lessons at home using the website: www.thinkthroughmath.com. The program will require your child's username and password from school (numbers and letters).
In Reading, we will continue the 1st 30 Days in our new reading series (Benchmark Literacy). These first 30 days will have us develop anchor charts to create class expectations during the 90 minute literacy block, start our Fountas and Pinnell level testing, and reviewing genre types. Next week, students will practice how to complete our literacy stations (Independent Reading, Partner Reading, Word Study, and Listening to Text). We will also start meeting in guided reading groups. Your child will either be reading with me, Miss Erler, or Mrs. Rodenbeck. These guided reading groups will rotate with different teachers, so your child will be working with one of us every two weeks.
In Social Studies, we will finish Chapter 2-Native American Groups in the United States. Your child will have their Chapter 2 test on Thursday, September 25. Your child will receive a study guide on Tuesday and we will review on Wednesday.
In Writing, we will continue the 1st 30 days of Benchmark Writing lessons-working on procedures within the writing block. This week we will focus on pre-writing and beginning a class story.
We will continue Spelling next week. We will take a pre-test on Monday. If your child receives a 100% on the test, your child will not have to complete homework or re-take the spelling test on Friday (only completing the dictation section).

Remember-we are only able to bring in healthy snacks and treats to the classroom. I sent home the brochure this week. We will have all birthday celebrations on the LAST Friday each month.
CASS student awards are based on the following criteria at the end of the grading period: All homework turned in on time 6 out of 9 weeks and no white slips.
Have a Great Weekend!!
