Roadrunner Review
November 2016 Principal Newsletter by Erika Krohn
Attitude of Gratitude
November is my favorite time of year! The school year is well under way. It's a time when students have been trained in most classsroom procedures and routines so teachers are really able to get down to the nitty gritty of teaching and learning. The air gets a little cooler, and if we're lucky-we might see some colorful leaves. My kids and I enjoy baking pumpkin bread for our friends and neighbors. But the biggest reason that I love November is the focus on being thankful. One of our family traditions is to put out the Thankful Jar on November 1. Each day, my family jots down one thing they are thankful for and puts it in the jar. We read all the Thankful Notes at Thanksgiving Dinner. It sure makes for some great conversation! I've even saved some of those Thankful Notes that were really special to me. One of my notes will say how thankful I am to touch the lives of our wonderful Canyon Rim students. What are some of your family's November traditions? Please tell us in the comment section. I'd love to hear from you!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Krohn
Canyon Rim 2016/2017 Theory of Action
If we commit to questions, responses, and reflection that promote critical thinking, then students will be prepared for the rigor of college and career.
The teachers are making sure that the majority of questions and tasks that are being asked of students are at Level 2 and 3 of Costa's Levels of Questioning. In addition, teachers are using response frames and thinking stems to elicit student responses that use academic language in complete sentences. Lastly, teachers are making sure to provide time for student reflection of what they have learned. See some examples below of questions, response frames, and reflection.
