Music Appreciation: Week 11
16 Week Session
Welcome to Week 11
What Are We Studying Next?
Music of the 60s and 70s
Popular music of the United States in the 1960s became tied up into causes, influenced by the sexual revolution, feminism, Black Power and environmentalism. This trend took place in a tumultuous period of massive public unrest in the United States which consisted of the Cold War, Vietnam War, and Civil Rights Movement.
Popular music of the United States in the 1970s saw various forms of pop music dominating the charts. Often characterized as being shallow, 70s pop took many forms and could be seen as a reaction against the high-energy and activist pop of the previous decade. New York City saw a period of great innovation; hip hop, punk rock and salsa were invented in 70s New York, which was also a center for electronic music, techno and disco.
Assignments to expect:
- One discussion question on disco music
- One assignment on the British Invasion
- One module listening project of Music from the 60's and 70's
- One module test
Quick Note:
Please be sure to cite your sources in your work. Please also remember to use your own words. If you use something word for word from one of your sources, please be sure to put quotation marks around it. Have questions? Drop me an email! I'm happy to help.
Important Things to Note
You can always submit your work early (with the exception of the final exam). For all projects and assignments submitted early (this does not include quizzes/tests), you will have the option to resubmit these after they've been graded (to be regraded) as long as they are resubmitted before the original assignment due date. Please keep in mind it can take up to 72 hours to receive an assignment back. If you would like the ability to resubmit your assignment, please factor in the amount of time needed for grading in addition to the amount of time you would need to modify your assignment before the assignment deadline.
Extra Learning Opportunity (due Thursday, November 19th):
1. Earn up to 10 additional points for up to your 5 lowest graded listening assignments throughout the semester.
- Attend a live concert (any type of concert!). Submit a photo or scan of the program, in addition to a reflection on the experience (what were the differences between attending live and listening to music at home? did/do you prefer one to the other? what are the advantages or disadvantages of attending a live concert?) and on the selections performed. Please reference the "Listening Rubric" for writing about the performance. Your concert selection should not be one in which you are performing! Each concert/reflection will be eligible to add up to 10 points to 1 listening assignment. You may submit a total of 5 concert reflections. You may not count a concert your performed in! While the last day to turn these in is Thursday, November 19th, please do not wait until the last minute (there may not be any concerts to attend if you wait until the last minute).

About Me
I'm originally from Pennsylvania, but moved to Georgia before high school.
I graduated from Richmond Hill High School before pursuing my BME in Music Education from Armstrong State University. After graduating from Armstrong, I moved throughout the country several times with my husband while he earned his master's degree and than worked towards finishing his DMA (Doctor of Musical Arts) from the University of North Texas. During this time, I received my MA in Museum Studies from Johns Hopkins University.
In addition to my love of music & museums, I am a huge fan of Indiana Jones, Marvel comics, traveling, photography, and anything Disney. When I'm not teaching for GAVS, I can usually be found spending time with my family!
