Logging
Logging
Logging, or commercial logging, involves cutting trees for sale as timber or pulp. The timber is used to build homes, furniture, etc and the pulp is used to make paper and paper products. Logging is generally categorized into two categories: selective and clear-cutting.
Selective logging is when the loggers pick out a specific wood usually in high value.
Clear cutting is when the loggers cut down all the trees, clearing the forest.
Consequences of logging
An Impact on the land are extinctions. There are many species that use trees for either shelter, protection, or a source of food. If their trees are gone they could become extinct. Logging could also cause desertification. Trees absorb a lot of the water when it rains. If there are no trees to absorb the water near by rivers or lakes could flood. It can also create watersheds due to the flooding
Future of logging
Costa Rica has lost over 60% of its forest cover to logging. Although 40% of costa rica's land is covered by forests, only a small percentage of primary forest remains. I think in a few years Costa Rica will lose all of its forest land and many animals will become extinct.
