CUSD Holds MLK Day Service Project Event at CHS
On Monday, the Chester Upland School District joined the nation in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s life and legacy by hosting a community service project.
Dozens of volunteers came out to Chester High School to clean and participated in other activities that promoted service and teamwork.
The district would like to thank all of the volunteers.
#DidYouKnow
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. lived in Chester while attending Crozier Theological Seminary (1948-1951). There is a bronze sculpture (bust) of Dr. King located on the grounds of J. Lewis Crozier Library, 620 Engle Street.
CUSD Receives Agriculture Grant
CUSD has been awarded a $7,500 Youth & Agriculture Direct Grant through the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture.
This grant will be used to support the district’s Agricultural Sustainability thru STEM Education & the Internet of Things (ASSET) initiative. ASSET is a college and career awareness program designed to introduce underrepresented students and teachers in our district to smart “precision” agriculture, renewable energy, clean water, and critical infrastructure management.
State resources like this grant are critical as we work to strengthen our Career & Technical Education (CTE) curriculum, address long-standing inequities, and empower our young scholars to be the best versions of themselves.
Parent University/PNC Bank First Financial Literacy Workshop A Success
Last Thursday, Parent University hosted the first of three financial literacy workshops in partnership with PNC Bank.
PNC BANK Rep Nelson Acevedo spoke to attendees about different topics surrounding finances and provided them with helpful tips and materials to take home.
The two remaining sessions will take place on February 7 and February 9 from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Edgmont Scholars Academy.
Refreshments will be served at 5:15 p.m.
CUSD Students Visit PA Capitol for Swearing-In Ceremonies
Learning can happen in and outside of the classroom!
Some of our students had a chance to see government at work and visited our State Capitol to watch elected officials get sworn into office on January 3, including newly-elected state Rep. Carol Kazeem.
It was a great opportunity for our children to experience the culmination of an election and how new members are officially granted the right to serve in their positions.
District-Wide Spelling Bee & Science Fair
The district has a few exciting district-wide events happening in February.
1. Spelling Bee
Students in grades K-8 will have the opportunity to participate in a district-wide Spelling Bee on February 9 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Chester High School.
2. Science Fair
Students in grades K-12 can take part in our Science Fair, which will focus on Sustainability in the Environment.
Permission slips to participate in Science Fair are due TODAY, January 20!
Please reach out to your child’s school for more information.
Oratorical Contest and Art Competition
Here are two more exciting opportunities for students of all grades in our district.
The Annual Frederick Douglass Oratorical Contest and the Andrew Turner Art Competition will take place at 6:00 p.m. on March 29 at STEM Academy.
You can visit the district’s website to see the full details for each contest.
I’m excited to see what our students can do.
