Monday Minute

August 5, 2019

Welcome Back to School and New Teacher Edition!

Big picture

Which conference is the only one in Indiana that focuses solely on middle school pedagogy and best practices? The IMLEA conference, of course! We also make it a point to include many classroom teachers as presenters. While numerous conferences charge hundreds of dollars, IMLEA members can attend for only $132/person. That fee includes breakfast, lunch, two keynotes, and five different breakout session time slots!

You may register your staff members (no price increase) and make hotel reservations (an increase of only $3 from last year. There is a price break for sending a team of four or more.

You can register now and submit names of attendees later. You can use a PD eLearning Day and send your entire staff! (Approval from DOE is no longer even required.)

Our keynote speakers are Buddy Berry on September 29 and Lori Desautels on September 30. Following the Sunday keynote, you can enjoy a performance of the unique and AWESOME “Infinity 2” Rock Band from East Washington MS in Pekin, IN. You can see an annotated list of our breakout sessions here; uploading that document into wordart.com resulted in the graphic above.

What IS the Monday Minute, and Why Am I Receiving It?

IMLEA sends out the Monday Minute during the school year to share resources & events that we hope will be helpful to you. Eventually, we send it to just members, but at the beginning of the year we send it out to a wider audience, including previous members, conference attendees, new administrators, and other interested partners. If you have any suggestions for things that you would like to see included, want to share happenings (even pictures) from your school, or have questions, please send them to Susie Highley. Feel free to email this newsletter to your staff/co-workers.

These Academics Spent $1.35 To Make Middle School Less Awful. How?

This Time article describes an interesting study involving students from Wisconsin who answered a simple writing prompt twice that seemed to make a real difference. One time is at the beginning of the year, the other a month later. One key question: "Your study suggests that what middle schoolers really need is a sense of belonging. How did your intervention foster that?"

What Would You Do with $12,000 to Spend on Yourself?

There is less than one month left to submit the application for the Lilly Teacher Creativity Grant. It IS all about you! Note that the application deadline is September 3; often educators scramble at the last minute, especially with letters of reference. I have heard that reviewers often make an initial opinion of the application in the first thirty seconds; be sure to convey your passion for your topic from the very beginning! There is a helpful page with tips for writing your proposal.
