LSES Weekly Update
Exceptional things happen here!
Week of April 11-15
Principal's Message
This week is National Volunteer Week! We want to take this opportunity to thank all the amazing volunteers that make our school an exceptional school! Without you, we would not be able to enrich our students' lives and be able to provide for the needs of our students and their families. We also want to thank all the parents for trusting us with your amazing students. We are so proud to work with such wonderful community!
Thank you very much for all you do!

A peek into the 6th grade...
- We are starting a research project on animal habitats. Students will research an animal of their choosing. They will build an animal habitat diorama, write a report on their animal, and give a speech.
- We have just finished studying the book The Giver. Students had to read the book and write 3 different alternate endings to the story. During our Right Brain Initiative residency with the Northwest Children's Theater, we worked with the artist to make the story come alive. Students explored creative expression of their interpretations from the book with their minds and bodies.
- Last week, Mr. Petrick, the principal from Evergreen Middle School (EMS) came to visit the 6th graders to present Forecast (selection of classes for next year) information to them and to talk about what to expect when they attend EMS next year.
- The Science Fair will be held on April 28. Students have already received packets that list all due dates. All students are strongly encouraged to participate.
- Outdoor School will be held at Camp Magruder May 16-18 this year. Students should start collecting things they will need for their trip. Thanks to the LDS church in our community that has adopted our school, students already have a great head start on the items they need to bring. The church has donated many items to help make this a successful trip. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to them for showing how much they care about our students.

Get Active!
Dear Lincoln Street parents:
As the weather is getting nice and sunny, our daylight is getting longer and longer. You can use this extra daylight to spend quality time with your children as well as encourage them to be more active. Here are some ideas that you can do to get the whole family moving!
Take your family to the closest park. (we are lucky that in Hillsboro there are many parks) Most likely, there is one close to your house. Once you are at the park you can walk, jog, run, ride your bike, jump rope, play tag, play with any kind of ball, play badminton, or try to remember some of the games that you played when you were little. If you don’t feel you want to do something like that, just being outside is going to help you and your child's brain to be more oxygenated. My biggest recommendation to you …. Move. Get active.
To find a park near you, go to https://www.hillsboro-oregon.gov/index.aspx?page=893.

From the Counselors
Hello Sunshine!
As we near summer, the sun has been showing itself more. Vitamin D, sometimes called the "sunshine" vitamin, plays a crucial role in good physical and mental health and the prevention of diseases. When the sun's ultraviolet rays penetrate bare skin, it sets off a process in the body that produces vitamin D. Every tissue in the body has vitamin D receptors, including the brain, heart, muscles, and immune system, which means vitamin D is needed at every level for the body to function.
As many of us spend more and more time on computers, game consoles, and watching television, we're not outdoors as much as we once were. Doctors recommend that children and adults of all ages spend at least 10 to 20 minutes a day in the sun to receive the amazing health benefits from vitamin D. So make sure you take advantage of these sunny days by going outside for a walk, playing with the kids outside, or just lounging in the sun after work. Your body and mind will thank you for it!
