Why “Pray, Fast and Abstain” during Lent?

The three traditional ‘pillars of Lenten observances’ are prayer, fasting and almsgiving.

Prayer draws us closer to God …. The more we pray and spend time in God’s presence, the more we are transformed into the people we are created to be.

Fasting is one of the most ancient practices linked to Lent … The hunger pangs it creates remind us of our hunger for God and of the suffering that others experience because of lack of food. Fasting reminds us and calls us to live up to our baptismal responsibility to show Christ’s love to the world and to work to alleviate suffering.

Abstaining from meat traditionally links us to the poor, who could rarely afford meat … Its aim, is to spiritually link us with those who lack the food we take for granted.

Almsgiving is our sign of care for those in need and also expresses our gratitude for all that God has given us.

Please encourage your child/children to keep their Lenten promises and contribute to Project Compassion

If you were unable to make it to the Commitment Mass and you still want your child to make a sacrament this year, then you need to book an appointment with Fr Benny before the end of next week.

The Year One classes are celebrating their first class liturgy on Tuesday 9 March beginning at 9.00am. All parents and friends are invited to attend in the MacKillop Hall.

A special thank you to Fr Liam for blessing our classrooms over the past week. This is an important Faith Tradition, and we are very appreciative of both Fr Liam, with Fr Benny’s support, for their presence and assistance in our school.

As mentioned in our Week Two newsletter, Paul Litherland, founder and co-owner of Surf Online Safe will be visiting our school on Wednesday 24 March. Paul will present to our Year 5 & 6 students during the day, before presenting to parents later in the evening (6:30-8:00pm, in the MacKillop Hall). It is wonderful that we are able to have Paul present to our senior students and parents on this important issue. If you would like to attend the parent evening, please register at by Wednesday 17 March. More information can be found at

We have decided that formal parent/teacher meetings will take place at the beginning of Term Two. These meetings usually take place at the end of Term One, in a traditional ten-week term. This term was already shorter, at nine weeks, prior to the Perth and Peel regions going into lockdown. This made Term One an eight-week term. It is important that teachers have time to get to know their students, build relationships and gather appropriate assessment data to inform teaching and learning. Over the last few years, we have provided parents with Student Summary Sheets towards the end of Term One. This information has guided parent/teacher meetings. Given the shorter term and importance of knowing the capabilities of each child, teachers will have until Week Eight to complete their Student Summary Sheets. These will be uploaded to SEQTA Engage for parents on Wednesday 31 March – the second last day of Term One. Parent/teacher interviews will then take place at the commencement of Term Two. A link for online registration for parent/teacher meetings will be included in our next newsletter.

School photos will be taking place on Wednesday 24 March (Pre-Primary to Year Six) and Friday 26 March (Pre-Kindy). Order forms will be sent home with your child by the end of this week and must be returned by Tuesday 16th March. Family photos will take place from 8:00am-8:50am. All photos will take place in the hall. Students from Years 1-6 are to be wearing their full summer uniform. Our Pre Kindy – Pre Primary students are to wear their usual clothing.

You may have noticed teachers beginning to do specific testing on students, across all year groups. These tests, both for literacy and numeracy, are to help the teacher understand exactly where your child is at in these subject areas and how best to program for individual needs. They also reinforce our commitment as a school to differentiate the curriculum and meet each learner’s needs.

All Pre-Primary students in Western Australian will participate in an On Entry Assessment Program to provide teachers and schools with information about the skills and understandings that a child brings to school. Conducting this assessment early in the year ensures that your child’s teacher has information about the current skills and understandings of each child to assist with the planning and development of targeted learning programs that address the needs of each individual and identify children who may require early intervention or extension. This approach is supported by national and international research into the early identification of students’ literacy and numeracy skills. The assessment period is during Weeks 3-6 of Term One. At the conclusion of the assessment parents will be provided an overview of their child's results.

Our junior primary classroom teachers will soon begin administering Observation Surveys and Mathematics Assessment Interviews (MAIs) to a number of students. The Observation Survey includes six literacy tasks, all of which are necessary for describing a child’s emerging reading and writing behaviours. The MAI is a one-on-one assessment carried out in order to obtain information about students’ strengths and challenges in the areas of place value, counting, addition & subtraction and multiplication & division. This information enables teachers to meet learners at their point of need and to build upon Number skills that are fundamental to learning new concepts. A number of students in our middle-upper primary class will also complete the MAI.
