Dear Parents,
Rocks provide an interesting way to explore science concepts about their physical properties, the composition of the Earth's surface, and change over time. Children can explore social studies concepts about the location of different types of rocks, how people use rocks everyday, and the work of geologists who study rocks as their job.
The students have been having a great time exploring all the different ways they see rocks around them! Our "Pre-Kindergarten Geologists" went to explore the hills around the school. We had such a fun time exploring the BIG rocks around ISP.
During choice time, they are sorting and classifying rocks by their physical attributes (smooth/rough and shiny/dull), changing the form of rocks by rubbing them together to make sand, and learning about the different uses for rocks through time (tools, decorations, games, jewelry, buildings ans statues). They are enjoying their responsibility as "scientists" as they experiment with how "magma" explodes out of volcanoes, becomes lava and then cools into hard rock. In addition, they continue to discuss the qualities of rocks they find around them every day. Please continue to encourage their curiosity about rocks by asking them questions and reflecting with them on their answers.
In the upcoming weeks, we will talk about the three types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic) and the cycles they go through. They also will focus more on the minerals derived from rocks and fossils created within rocks and by rocks.
If you have any samples of minerals, rocks with fossils, and igneous, sedimentary, or metamorphic rocks that you would like to share with the class, we would love to see them!
