April 2022 News Chat
A Message From Dr. Kevin Jauch
If April showers are truly an indication of May flowers, I can’t wait for the rainbow of color to grace our spring months!
In the field of education, March and April represent a unique stretch of time. While bringing closure to one school year and wrapping up the loose ends of current projects comes with excitement, and hopefully a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment, there is also the planning and preparation of what’s to come demanding an equal amount of attention. The conjunction of and juxtaposition between these two phenomena take up a lot of our emotional and intellectual bandwidth. If you are feeling a bit tapped energy-wise these days, please know that warmer, sunny times are ahead both figuratively and literally!
As always, know that the North Cook Regional Office of Education/Intermediate Service Center is here to support you, answer your questions, and champion your efforts to educate our students. Never hesitate to reach out to us!

License Renewal
Educators with a PEL and/or CTE license that expires July 1, 2022 have until August 31st to complete any Professional Development (PD) required for renewal and pay all registration fees.
Educators working under an administrative license on a PEL that expires July 1, 2022 must complete the annually required Administrator Academy by June 30, 2022. Additionally, all Professional Development Hours (PDHs) required for renewal must be completed. ISBE does allow for an extension of August 31 to complete PDHs only.
Registration fees to renew a PEL in either case should be paid via the educator's personal ELIS account.
Professional Development Hours
Educators can carry over excess professional development hours completed between April 1 - June 30 of the final year of their renewal cycle to the next five-year renewal cycle. The Educator Licensure Information System (ELIS) will automatically roll over any excess PD hours to the next cycle for educators.
Submit any questions you may have about licensure using our handy form and a Licensure Specialist will respond to you quickly.

REMINDER: National Board Subsidy Available
The State offers a subsidy to pay for all fees associated with becoming a National Board Certified Teacher other than an annual $75 registration fee. The deadline to apply for the subsidy is May 10, 2022. North Cook ISC will host a cohort for teachers and counselors pursuing National Board Certification during the 2022-2023 school year. They will meet 12 times and be led by a trained National Board Certified Teacher to guide candidates through the process at no cost. Also, teachers can earn 24 Professional Development hours (PDHs) as they complete their National Board components.

AASA's Learning 2025 Initiative
selected excerpts from School Administrator magazine, March 2022, by Bill Daggett *
We need to be future-focused by putting a stake in the ground for the year 2025 and figuring out what our school systems need to do to ensure we are preparing students for their future and not our past.
Network districts are moving forward with deep changes...based on growth models in cognitive, interpersonal and self-leadership skills. They are redesigning their instructional programs...around the skills, knowledge and attributes needed to be successful.
Those primary skill sets help to identify the secondary skills sets, which are digital, communication and technology; social and well-being; and higher cognitive skills.
Instructional leaders have recognized that changes needed...are not about content but about instructional practices - a fundamental shift in how instruction is organized and delivered where the teacher becomes more of a manager of student learning than a deliverer of instruction.

Scripps National Spelling Bee
The Scripps Regional Spelling Bee was held March 29th at Triton College with winners from North Cook, South Cook and West 40 competing.
Avyay Kodali, a 7th grader representing Plum Grove Jr. High School in Palatine CCSD15, was declared the winner after 15 rounds and will attend the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C. Memorial Day week. Congratulations to Avyay!
In a true show of collaboration and support, Calvin Franke, a 2019 North Cook spelling bee winner also from Plum Grove Jr. High, was Avyay's coach.
