Why just the rich?

Before the industrial revolution, most American children received little formal schooling, although wealthy children were taught Reading writing arithmetic forigin language and prayers by private Tutor, some reformers like Horance Mann of Massachussetts fought to provide free public elementary school to every child. These reformers wanted all American children of all social classes to come together in the same common schools. Horance Mann also introduced the first schools to train teachers. Today all American children receive free schooling thanks to these reformers.
