Superintendent's Community Update
February 15, 2023
A Message from Superintendent Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
Dear Newport Schools Parents, Families, and Staff:
I know winter break is on our students’ minds, but we need everyone focused on school work this week. Every school day really does matter when it comes to learning, so please make sure your child is on top of their homework, assignments, and any quizzes or exams this week. And the reward for all that hard work is winter break which starts on Monday, February 20th and runs through Friday, February 24th.
I also want to take a moment to reiterate something I’ve shared in the last few Superintendent’s Updates. We are at an exciting and important time in public education in Newport and Rhode Island. We have a Governor, Mayor, City Council, and School Committee who are all huge supporters of education and the need for all of us to come together so we can better support all of our students. That’s why I’m so excited to be working on Newport Public Schools’ updated Strategic Plan and new Educational Plan. These will be the pillars of our work over the next 5-10 years and that’s why we need your feedback and ideas.
Some of you participated in our special workshop with the School Committee on February 7th, thank you for a great discussion and sharing your thoughts. To engage more parents, students, and community partners we will be announcing a series of community forums, to be held throughout the city, all focused on our Strategic Plan and Educational Plan. We’ll talk about our district’s changing demographics, where our students are doing well, and where they and our teachers need more support, our school facilities, partnerships, and vision for ensuring that all of our students receive a quality education - anywhere, anytime. I will be sharing forum dates and locations in the near future and I’m looking forward to hearing from you and as many voices as possible as we craft a new strategic and educational direction for Newport Public Schools and our students.
Stay focused on learning through Friday, and have a great winter break next week!
Sincerely,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.

Atentamente,
Colleen Burns Jermain, Ed.D.
superintendente de escuelas
Important Information
This is an FYI to keep everyone informed on happenings throughout the New England area and schools. Fortunately NPS has not had any of these calls, but want everyone to be aware that this is happening, and there are protocols in place if something of this nature occurs.
Please see the message below:
We want to share with you some important information that we have recently received from the Rhode Island State Fusion Center (RISFC), the Newport Police Department and recent local news reports. According to their report, there have been several hoax phone calls delivered to schools across southeastern New England indicating that a school intruder event is either about to happen or is actively in progress.
We are sending this message to prepare our school community in the event that any Newport School receives one of these calls.
Please remember that if a call like this, real or fake is received, our district protocol is that the building will immediately go into "Active Lockdown/Shelter in Place." This means that doors will be locked, blinds will be closed, and ALICE protocol will be followed. Students and faculty should be dispersed throughout the school and prepared to react.
Doors will remain locked and closed and students/faculty/staff should remain quiet until an announcement is made indicating that the Lockdown has ended.
The Newport Police Department will work with us through any safety situation. We will
do our best to communicate immediately about such an event. Safety is our number one priority.
Thank you for your support. Encourage everyone, “If you see (hear) something, say
something.” Should you have any questions, concerns, or need further information, please do not hesitate to reach out to a building administration or Newport Police.

The Rhode Island Department of Education is currently administering its annual SurveyWorks Family Survey, which is an opportunity for family members to provide feedback about Newport Public Schools. This is an ideal tool to help us update and create a new strategic and educational plan for our schools. You can take the short survey online through March 31st. To take the survey, visit: bit.ly/ridefamily then choose your child’s school (Pell, Thompson, or Rogers) from the dropdown list. You may also complete the survey using the QR code. The more information you provide us the better informed decisions we can make. This is a team effort - so please help us by filling out the survey. Responses are anonymous, and your feedback is incredibly valuable to our school leadership teams.
