Letter from the Principal

Dear Mustang Families,


A new school year is upon us and August 24th will be here before we know it. Hopefully your family is able to rest and recharge before the new school year begins in a few weeks. To say it has been an unusual year is an understatement, but we are confident that by working together over the next few months every student will have the support necessary to be successful this school year.


As we start to think about the beginning of school, we would like to breakdown what a student schedule may look like and further illustrate some of the time allotted during the day. Our team has prepared a "Day in the Life" checklist for our students to help them acclimate to their new online learning schedule. Below is an example of a Student Schedule where you will see each block with their class as well as both CCE and Learning Support built into the schedule.


CCE = Collaboration, Conferencing, and Extension - 9:00 - 9:55

This CCE time might be teacher- or student-directed. It may include (but is not limited to) teachers being signed into a conference for questions while students work on practice or preparation tasks, one-on-one conferencing, students collaborating on projects, oral assessments, or additional practice and intervention tasks.


Learning Support - 11:00 - 11:55

Based on stakeholder feedback about Spring Virtual Learning, we have built-in time for 1:1 or small group work with teachers for feedback and support. This is time for students to individually access teachers, counselors & specialists, receive navigational online support, and targeted interventions. This time is also dedicated to ensuring students with IEPs, 504s as well as our English Learners, to have an opportunity to meet with their teachers and receive additional support. This time also provides all students the ability to schedule meetings using their teacher’s calendly link.

Parent University

In order to support parents as you are supporting students at home, FCCPS has added a page about online learning to Parent University. Helping Your Student With Online Learning. It has basic information about how to log into Schoology, our Learning Management System, which is how courses are delivered and Powerschool Gradebook, which teachers and students use to keep track of student assignments and grades. We will continue adding resources. If you have a suggestion about topics to include in Parent University, please send a message to Marybeth Connelly.

Orientation Information


Rising 9th Grade orientation will be held virtually on August 21, 2020 from 10:00-11:30AM. Look for this information under Counseling Class of 2024: Freshman


New Student Orientation will be held virtually on August 20, 2020 from 1:00-3:00PM. More information will be sent parents in the coming weeks.


We are working with the PTSA on a schedule for our parents during this as well.

PowerSchool Access Restored August 14, 2020

On Friday, August 14, 2020 PowerSchool access will be restored for all middle and high school parents and students for the 2020-2021 school year.

If you were not able to access your Semester 2 grades earlier and prefer not to wait until August 14, please contact our Registrar, Ms. Kemp.


Students will have access to their grades from the previous school year and their class schedules for the upcoming school year. While students have access to their schedules, please understand that schedules may change at any time prior to the first day of school in an effort to balance classes and resolve scheduling conflicts.


Students who have enrolled in a Hy-C course may notice a missing period in their schedule, this is not an error. These courses are added as additional periods. Counselors are working diligently to contact students who have scheduling conflicts.


If you notice a scheduling error or an incorrect class, please reach out to your counselor. They will work with you to fix the issue.

Laptop Exchange for Rising 9th Grade Students - YOU MUST RETURN YOUR COMPUTER!

Rising 9th grade students MUST return their Henderson issued computer and exchange it for a Mason issued computer. If you have already done this THANK YOU!


If you were unable to attend on the 3rd, you can exchange laptops/chargers between 10-1 at Henderson on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but we ask that you complete this process by August 15th.


We are requiring all students to wear masks and physically distance while in the buildings. Note that we will be limiting the amount of students allowed in the building at one time.



If you cannot complete this process before August 15th please email Adam White (whitea1@fccps.org) to coordinate your visit to Mary Ellen Henderson and Steven Knight (knights@fccps.org) for your visit to George Mason High School.

Welcome New Families to FCCPS!

Welcome New Students and Families!


Over the next few weeks, the Counseling Department will be reaching out for Registration appointments for new students. These meetings will take place with your students counselor virtually.


Students who are new to George Mason High School will be able to pickup their school-issued laptop by coming to the school building on Thursday August 20 between the hours of 9am-12pm. We are requiring all students to wear masks and physically distance while in the building.



New Student Orientation for students and parents will take place virtually on Thursday August 20 from 1-3 p.m.

Returning Student Enrollment

Returning student enrollment instructions for the 2020-21 school year were emailed to all families on or after July 6, 2020. Enrollment must be completed no later than August 7 to ensure the Student Health Information (Form D Regulation 9.60.1) is received. If a computer is needed to complete this registration, please contact Ms. Kemp in the Counseling office at kempl@fccps.org.


Withdrawing Students

If your student will not be returning to George Mason High School for the 2020-2021 school year, you must notify Lynette Kemp by completing this online Withdrawal Form or returning the completed form via email to kempl@fccps.org, or fax (703-248-5556), or by mail to the Counseling Office. Please note that if this form is not completed, the student's academic records may not be released to the parent/guardian or the new school. This form also notifies the registrar to send your student's final transcript to their new school and removes them officially from our Returning Student registration in Powerschool. Please make sure the school-issued laptop, textbooks, library books, and athletic uniforms have been returned. Also, pay any fines/fees incurred over the school year before completing the withdrawal process. If you are unsure of any outstanding items or fines/fees owed, please contact Ms. Kemp at 703-248-5526.

COLLEGE AND CAREER COUNSELING NEWSLETTER

Immunizations (Tdap Reminder)

Updated immunizations are still required upon enrolling in FCCPS for the 20-21 school year despite the virtual/online opening. Now is the time to contact your health care provider and schedule an appointment if you haven’t!


Please see the information below regarding immunization clinics being offered by the Fairfax County Health Department for all Fairfax County Health District residents, which includes Falls Church.


To help parents whose children need immunizations required for enrollment in school for the 2020-21 school year, the Fairfax County Health Department is offering community childhood vaccination clinics plus expanded hours to provide the Tdap vaccine at three clinics.


Vaccination clinics will be held:

  • Thursday, July 30, 2 to 6 p.m., Lincolnia Senior Center, 4710 N. Chambliss St., entrance D4, Alexandria.

  • Saturday, August 8, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, 5800 Backlick Rd., Springfield.

  • Saturday, August 15, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., St. Anthony Catholic Church, 3305 Glen Carlyn Rd., Bailey’s Crossroads.

  • Monday, August 17, 2 to 6 p.m., London Towne Elementary, 6100 Stone Rd. Centreville

  • Thursday, August 20, 2 to 6 p.m., Annandale District Office, 7611 Little River Tnpk, #400E, Annandale.

  • Saturday, August 29, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Mount Vernon District Office, 8350 Richmond Hwy, #233, Alexandria.

  • Thursday, September 3, 2 to 6 p.m., First Baptist Church of Springfield, 7300 Gary St., Springfield.


Tdap vaccines will be administered at clinics through August 28 at one of three locations.

Childhood vaccines protect children against potentially life-threatening illnesses such as polio, measles, whooping cough, and chicken pox. Students entering seventh grade and transfer students need a booster dose of the Tdap vaccine.


The Health Department follows strict safety protocols in its community vaccination clinics to limit exposure to patients. Only a select number of appointments per site will be available to protect families. Visitors age 2 and older are required to wear face coverings that cover the nose and mouth; temperature checks will be conducted at entrances; visitors will be required to stay 6 feet apart, and partitions will separate vaccination stations.


Parents can schedule an appointment by calling 703-246-6010, TTY 711. Complete information is available on the Health Department website.

Fall Athletics Update

Below is information regarding athletics for the upcoming year. As you have questions about athletics, please reach out to Mr. Marvin Wooten, GMHS' new athletic director. He can be reached at mwooten@fccps.org.

VHSL announces sports/activities plan for 2020-21

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The VHSL Executive Committee meeting in special session today voted (34-1-0) to move forward with Model 3 in its re-opening of sports and activities for the 2020-21 school year. Model 3 delays all VHSL sports and activities until December 14th and adopts the Condensed Interscholastic Plan. This model leaves all sports in the season where they are currently aligned.

Model 3 – Condensed Interscholastic Plan.

  • Season 1 (Winter) December 14 - February 20 (First Contest Date – December 28)
    • basketball, gymnastics, indoor track, swim/dive, wrestling
  • Season 2 (Fall) February 15 – May 1 (First Contest Date – March 1)
    • cheer, cross country, field hockey, football, golf, volleyball
  • Season 3 (Spring) April 12 – June 26 (First Contest Date – April 26)
    • baseball, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field

Yearbook Pick Up

Yearbooks have arrived and may be picked up every Tuesday and Thursday, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm from the Main Office. Please check-in at the Security Desk and practice social distancing, including wearing a mask.

A new school year is upon us. Although it is going to be a very different kind of school year, we want you to know that some things never change. The George Mason High School Athletic Boosters Association is ready to fulfill our mission in supporting Mason Athletics. Our goal is to help our teams, our athletes, our coaches, our administration and our entire athletic community to grow and thrive. As a 501c(3) school-affiliated organization that is formally recognized by FCCPS, the Athletic Boosters is able to help create a positive, supportive, and welcoming athletic experience for our entire community. How we do that in this most “unique” of years is definitely going to be a challenge. But it is a challenge we are prepared to meet.
