Career Development
6th grade: The counselors have been able to go into 6th grade classes and complete the Career Cluster Inventory with 6th graders. This Inventory is found on MissouriConnections.org. Students can type in their full email address and use the password: Hornet#1 to log in from home. Counselors plan to go into 6th grade one more time in the spring to complete a reality check and discuss post secondary options.
7th grade: The counselors have been able to also go into 7th grade once this fall and have students complete a Career Cluster Inventory and Reality check. This Inventory and Reality Check can be found on MissouriConnections.org. Students can type in their full email address and use the password: Hornet#1 to log in from home. Counselors plan to go into 7th grade one more time in the spring to start discussing high school terms, programs, and options.
8th grade: The counselors have been able to see 8th graders twice this fall. The first lesson was a refresher activity on the high school course description book and the second lesson was starting their ICAPs which stands for Individual Career and Academic Plan (formally known as 4 Year Plans). The counselor plans to go into 8th grade classes two more times in the spring to finish their ICAPs and look at example of high school transcripts.
Needing to see the counselor?
Students needing to access the counselor's office can submit a form from their chromebooks by clicking on the apps button. This form comes only to the counselor's. If you have any questions or need help finding the form refer to the email that was sent from Mrs. Horstmeier. You can also ask your teacher for help. Obviously if there is an emergency, students will be sent to the Counselors Office immediately. This is just a great way to help students stay in the classroom for instruction time.
Here are a few ways you can reach out to us in the FMS Counseling Office:
Mrs. Horstmeier works with students with a last name starting with an A-J and can be reached at shorstmeier@fulton58.org and Mrs. Crawford works with students with a last name starting with a K-Z and can be reached at mcrawford@fulton58.org
Ms. Jo is the Counseling Office secretary and can be reached at jwilliamson@fulton58.org.

Fulton Mental Health Screening 2018-2019
The Fulton Public School’s District School Mental Health Team will be conducting a voluntary district-wide mental health screening this fall. The purpose of the screening is to identify social-emotional supports to help all Fulton students be successful. All information collected through the screening will be kept confidential. Screening tools are not diagnostic. Rather, screening data will be used to identify students who may benefit from additional assessment or supports for emotional or behavioral problems. As part of the screening process, teachers in all buildings will complete a brief assessment of students’ social, academic, and emotional behavior. Students in the middle and high school will also complete a brief behavioral self-assessment. Participation in the screening is completely voluntary: parents or guardians may notify their building administrator if they do not want their child to participate, and middle/ high school students can also opt out themselves.
Why screen? Fulton School District is committed to helping all students be successful at school. The district already provides a variety of emotional and behavioral supports. Conducting a social-emotional health screening gives Fulton School District one more tool to best serve young people in this community. Screening data can help identify students who may need additional help and allows for earlier identification of possible problems. The screening also provides a snapshot of current social-emotional needs of students in the district to inform ongoing improvement efforts.
What screeners will be used? Teachers in all buildings will complete the Social, Academic, and Emotional Behavior Risk Screener (SAEBERS) for students in their classroom. Teachers at Fulton Education Center will complete the Devereux Early Childhood Assessment (DECA) for FPS preschool students in their classroom. Students in grades 2-12 will complete a self-report measure called the MySAEBRS.
Is the screening mandatory? No. Parents/guardians can request for their child not to participate in the screening process.
When and where will the screening take place? Teachers will complete the screeners during regularly-scheduled, district professional development in February. Students in grades 2-12 will complete the screener during a school day the week of October 8th. Screeners will be completed online.
How long does the screening take? It is estimated that teachers will spend about 20-35 minutes completing the screening tool for students in their classroom. The self-report measure takes about 5 minutes for young people to complete.
Where will the data be stored? Teachers and youth will complete the screeners online, so data from the screeners will also be saved in a secure file.
Who will have access to the results? Screening results will be used to identify Fulton students who may benefit from further assessment or supports. School personnel, including teachers, school counselors, teachers, and/or staff, will have access to student data. Results will be de-identified and shared more broadly at the district level to inform ongoing planning and improvement efforts.
There are 15 questions that students are asked to answer and they range from: I get along with my peers, I disrupt class, I like school and I feel nervous. Students respond to these statements by scoring never, sometimes, often and almost always. We will be conducting the screener on Thursday, October 11th. We hope all students will participate so we can assist all of our students in being successful here at FMS.

News from the Art Room
6th Grade:
Students this week will continue our new objective:
ELO: 1 Students will select and apply media, techniques, and processes.
FA1 Using opaque paint to overlap brush strokes to create a smooth even area FA2- Identify and demonstrate color value.
Students will practice watercolor techniques and focus on layer as well as other effects. Students will design and select six different fruit combinations and place them into a panel grid with work on background and color emphasis.
We will spend about three weeks on this content.
7th Grade:
Students are Continue work on our objective:
ELO: 1 Students will select and apply media, techniques and processes to solve challenging visual art problems.
FA1- using pencil to create simulated and implied texture. Create an original artwork that communicates nature. FA2-Identify the use of implied and simulated texture. Identify and demonstrate value and a range of values.
Students will be studying old barns and landscapes. Students will be looking at and practicing the use of value and discovering how to create texture with various line and shading techniques. We will be very drawing intensive for the next several weeks. Students will make several drawings of their “old Barns” and place emphasis on the layering work it takes to build up a finalized drawing. These often turn out amazing and challenge students to think about value, and perspective as well.
8th Grade:
We putting the final touches on lesson 2 and will continue to do more work in portrait study. We will shift focus later this week and begin working towards our second term Objectives with some process oriented lessons. We will be finalizing the objective target with a six panel parts of a portrait study where we practice drawing parts of the body such as eyes, ears, nose, and mouth, as well as hands and feet which give us all a challenge at times.
Lesson 2: American Gothic Reimagined
Objective: ELO 4: Students will explain the connections between art and the world around them
Students will continue working to create a parody of Grant Wood's "American Gothic". Students will work to recreate the portrait with their own modernized ideas. This will be a portrait study with three required subjects in the artwork. This is always a fun project, which allows students creative freedom. Students will also do a portrait study and do practice on facial features in a six panel as a breakdown component of this lesson. I feel the extra drawing practice is crucial for them to fully understand the visual literacy component, and more challenging part of this objective.
Proficiency Scales: For Art Project Based Curriculum Scoring are as follows.
Curriculum Marks for Standards Based Grading and Proficiency are available to view on the Parent Portal in SIS.
Art Club will now meet every 1st Wednesday of the month. After our initial meeting this was felt by the students to work so much better. Our next meeting will be October 3rd and I will put out an additional calendar next week for the additional dates. Thank you so much for understanding as we enter new territory.
Thanks for the support, and as always if you have any questions or concerns, please email me cchapman@fulton58.org
Artfully yours,
Mr. Chapman
