Restart vs. Shutdown- #128
Let's go down memory lane... a long time ago, shutdown and restart performed the same function- both were used to close down programs. Then, Windows created Fast Start-Up with Windows 8.
What is Fast Start-Up?
The Fast Start-up became the default in Windows. The main purpose was to save valuable seconds when you boot up your laptop by saving system files and drivers in a hibernation file. When you boot up, it uses the saved hibernation files and reloads the content which makes it faster than a restart. Due to it not completely clearing your laptop, the problems you had before you chose a fast start-up, you may experience the same problems. I tell you all of that to let you know you can't change this :).
Restart
When you restart your laptop, it shuts down the computer system temporarily and then turns it on again. During that time it's off, it clears up the RAM (Random Access Memory). When your computer is running, you have background processes running and logs and cache files are being created. Our Technology Department recommends to restart your laptop once a week.
Shutdown
Powering your laptop off at the end of the day can increase its longevity and help you fresh start the next day. Regular shutdowns have benefits in terms of energy efficiency, software updates, and heat management. It basically turns off all of the processes, but it still saves cache files, logs, etc. as mentioned in the restart section. This is why it is important to restart once a week. Our Technology Department recommends to shutdown your laptop daily before you leave for the day.
Updates
Google Drive
Google Drive is getting an update. When you go to drive.google.com, instead of landing in ‘My Drive’ you will now be directed to ‘Home.’ If you would like to set your default to ‘My Drive,’ click on the “Change to My Drive” option in the banner on Home:
