Big Rocks
I have shared before that one of my biggest strengths/weaknesses is focus. When life gets nutty, I try to manage and schedule everything. It is my crazy way of dealing with the world. Over the past few weeks, I have been behind the eight ball with a few projects at school, home, and church. It has been driving me crazy. All of these projects were due at the same time and it seemed nothing was going my way to finish them.
This week was the “Big Week” for all of those projects so I began the week with a hyper schedule to make sure everything was checked off of my list. The week appeared to be going well. We survived Halloween and the Safety Audit, but Wednesday things changed. Right as school was starting, I received a phone call from a friend at church. She informed me that my dad was in an accident on the by-pass with Andrew on their way to preschool. My first assumption was that he was rear ended at the stop light down the road, but you know what they say about assumptions. I quickly headed to the sight of the accident. The ambulance had already taken dad and Andrew to the hospital, but seeing the scene of the accident brought even more concern and fear. I couldn’t make sense of his truck being on the east bound lanes of the by-pass when he was headed west. Dad had passed out, his foot hit the accelerator, they crossed 3 lanes of traffic, jumped a deep culvert and crashed into a fence. Had it not been for God’s protection who knows what could have happened. Andrew ended up with many bumps, scrapes, and bruises. Dad, on the other hand, broke his sternum and 5 ribs. He is still in the hospital undergoing tests to explain why he passed out and for treatment of his injuries. He has a long road ahead of him.
I was sitting at my computer last night exhausted from spending time at the hospital and dealing with a craziness of a typical day when it hit me; I had not thought about all of my projects that had seemed so important just a couple of days ago. In fact, one of those projects probably won’t be finished and you know what….I don’t care. Well that is not completely true; I'm just not as stressed about it. It is amazing to me how one moment can totally flip your perspective. We have a tendency to let make little rocks much bigger than they should be. We are focused on the lesson plans, cleaning the house, the Facebook….you name it and none of those things should be a big rock.
If you don't know what or who those big rocks are, use this weekend to find them and reconnect. Our time is fragile in this world and so are our "Big Rocks". Spend time with those rocks, hug them, and show them how important they are.
