## ~Happenings in Room 32~

These last weeks before break have been B*U*S*Y! On Monday, we watched Ibsen

Studio 's production of A Christmas Carol. Fox Hill students loved it. Fox Hill students and staff are fortunate that Ibsen Theater and Dance include us in their performance schedule.

On Monday I started re-testing the students' F & P levels. I will be informing parents of the updated reading level as soon as I finish testing.

Our Winter Party is on Dec. 20th. Mrs. Phillippi is the Head Room Parent for the Winter Party.

Note the events: We have special activities scheduled for the 17th and 19th of December.

In last week's Friday Folder, Coach Lentz sent a form for Fox Hill students to take swim lessons at the Gladstone Community Center. This lesson time is reserved for Fox Hill students only! The lessons are conveniently scheduled after school, and Fox Hill families will receive a discounted rate! The space is limited to the first 30 students who sign up.

## What are we learning?

In Science, we have been learning about Matter and Energy. On Tuesday students completed an experiment on Matter. Students learned the properties of Matter. They learned that Matter is anything that takes up space. Matter can consist of solids, liquids or gases.

In Math, students are learning how to figure Perimeter and Area. Students know that to find the Perimeter of an object they must measure all sides and add. To find the Area of an object students must measure the length and the width of the object and multiply. We will spend a lot of time in the coming weeks learning about Geometry. This is a new concept for 3rd graders.

In Readers' Workshop, our focus this week was to explain how characters' actions contribute to the sequence of events. Next week we will examine point of view. Students will determine what the characters' points of views are about a situation within the text.

In Writers' Workshop, students are writing commentaries. We practiced writing our first commentary using a friendly letter format. Students wrote letters to me giving me their opinion on The Coterie's production of the The Wiz. Students had to tell me why they liked it, or why they didn't like it. The most important component of their letter was stating reasons to back up their opinions.
