This week in...
Elena was our Star of the Week!
Reading:
- We wrapped up A Tree is Growing by completing a graphic organizer by identifying text and graphic features. Then, we determined how the text or graphic feature helped our comprehension.
- We also completed a dig deep response and a quiz.
- We went on a nature walk and examined all of the different trees we have on our school grounds.
- The students learned how to identify Cherry Blossom Trees, Spineless Locust Tree, Maple Trees, and Japanese Maple Trees. Students will be making posters to represent what they learned on our walk and will incorporate text and graphic features on it, too.
- Finally, students completed a text and graphic features hunt using a Time For Kids.
Math:
We continued practicing double and triple digit Lattice and the Partial Products Algorithm for Multiplication.
I have been encouraging all students to use their favorite method to solve and check with the other method they know.
We continued to work on Open Response questions.
To see videos of how to complete these problems, check out Everyday Math Online, click Resources (on the bottom of the page), click Algorithms in Everyday Math, select grade 3, select multiplication, select algorithm, select the animation of your choosing.
It is important that students are studying their multiplication facts each night. It not only helps build good study habits, but also builds stamina and quick recall! While it is great students are using strategies such as repeated addition and drawing pictures, these facts must be known by heart. Students can check out my eBoard for additional practice with this skill.
Writing:
- Students participated in an inquiry process that asks them to consider introduction strategies of mentor text.
- Students learned one way to make a catchy introduction is to include metaphors and similes.
- Students reviewed their information writing using a checklist and then how to make a plan for revision.
- Students learned additional revision strategies for clearing up the confusion in their work by imagining a different perspective and role-playing with a partner.
Word Study:
- We will pick up with Word Study after PARCC.
Science:
- Students learned what it's like to be blasted off into space and how astronauts prepare for space.
- SO many students are excited for these lessons and love learning about space!
Habit of the Month: Think Win-Win
I balance courage for getting what I want with consideration for what others want. I make deposits in others’ Emotional Bank Accounts. When conflicts arise, I look for third alternatives.
I encourage parents to submit their children for nominations (you can email it right to me)! I'd love to celebrate what a child does outside of the classroom as much as we celebrate what they do in school. :-)
Reminders
Please remember to have your child submit his/her poem for Poet of the Week prior to the presentation for approval.
Absences/Late: Always include csattendanceoffice@haddonfield.k12.nj.us on all emails regarding absence, early dismissal or late arrival. This email is checked frequently throughout the day.
Vocabulary: Vocabulary for each story in Journeys can be found on my eBoard under the Language Arts tab. The red tabs are sectioned by lesson (example: L1 is Lesson 1 etc.). Vocabulary can also be found in the Journeys textbook or online textbook (before the reading selection).
Strings Make Up Work: Please keep in mind that your child will be missing instructional time when he or she attends strings. Any work that he or she miss will be expected to be made up.
Birthdays: If your child would like to celebrate his/her birthday, please contact me so we can set up a date to celebrate! See my eBoard for more details.
Student Logins: If students forget their Journeys Textbook click this link for the website. Students have logins and passwords in the front of their Agendas. EDM Home Links can be accessed on the website. The login information is also in the front of your child's planner book. My eBoard has additional information on logging in under the Language Arts and Math tabs.
