Very Proud of Alumnus, David Zou
Dear St. Paul Students and Parents,
My name is David Zou and I graduated from St. Paul in 2011. When I was at St. Paul, one of my favorite actives to do was to read books. I am very proud and thankful that St. Paul instilled in me the drive to learn more about what I don't know through reading. However, not every child in the world is allowed that kind of opportunity to read and learn. This is why I am organizing a book drive where I am collecting 1000 books for a library in Sierra Leone. In Sierra Leona the adult literacy rate is 35%. That means only 35 adults out of 100 have the ability to read in Sierra Leone.
You can help change this statistic by donating gently used books or even brand new books to the book drive. I will be putting a box outside Ms. Cochran's office. For this particular library, I am collecting books from Kindergarten to 8th grade reading level. I want to thank you all for supporting this wonderful cause and I also want you all to know that by doing this you are giving another child, who are just like your sons and daughters, the gift of education.
If you have any questions regarding whether or not a particular book can or cannot be donated please feel free to contact me through email at zoudavid1@gmail.com and if you want to learn more about the children that will benefit from book drives like this one please watch this Youtube Video.
Thanks,
David Zou
EXPANSION OF READY 4K CAMPS
See the public announcement (link below) of an exciting new partnership between Jefferson County Public Schools and Catholic Schools that will provide a great lift to 1,200 youngsters who will enter kindergarten this fall. On behalf of everyone at the Catholic Education Foundation and across the Catholic community, we are thrilled to be invited by Superintendent Donna Hargens and her team to participate in this wonderful and meaningful endeavor that will undoubtedly produce great results for our kids!
Special thanks to my friend Sam Corbett, Executive Director of the Jefferson County Public Education Foundation, and my partner Leisa Schulz, Superintendent of Catholic Schools, for their leadership in bringing this idea to life.
And, of course, none of this would have been possible without the vision of our friends at the C. E. & S. Foundation who launched the pilot program last summer and serve as the major benefactor of this year’s project.
THANK YOU ALL!
We can’t wait to see the results of this program in the fall!

LFPL-Exciting Summer Reading Program
The Louisville Free Public Library’s Summer Reading Program is almost here. Last year, the program encouraged more than 60,000 children and teens in the Metro area to read for fun during the summer, with 30,500 of them completing the program. That’s more than 290,000 books read! New this year, LFPL is offering online registration for Summer Reading through an exciting new digital service called...
Beanstack
...is a parent engagement tool that connects families with free reading recommendations — helping take the guesswork out of finding books for young readers—as well as educational programs like Summer Reading and the Mayor’s Cultural Pass. Parents, caregivers, and educators can pre-register online for Summer Reading and the Cultural Pass and, by creating custom profiles for young readers, receive learning tips and book recommendations that are available for checkout from the Library. Parents can then easily track on a personal dashboard their child’s reading progress while their children earn special badges for reaching goals in the Summer Reading Program and participating in the Cultural Pass – all in a simple, fun, and easy-to-use format!
To preregister for the Summer Reading Program and the Cultural Pass, visit LFPL.org/SummerReading today. Preregistration will speed up the process for picking up a Cultural Pass once they become available on May 23 (all 18 library locations).

Celebration of William Shakespeare's 400th Anniversary
Kick Off City-wide Celebration of William Shakespeare's 400th Anniversary
- Accompanied by representatives from Louisville’s arts and cultural institutions, Mayor Greg Fischer officially announced an eight-month-long, city-wide celebration of William Shakespeare called Will in the Ville. This collaborative initiative—spearheaded by the Frazier History Museum, University of Louisville, and the Louisville Free Public Library—involves more than 45 arts, cultural, and educational organizations throughout Louisville and Southern Indiana. As part of the international commemoration of the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, it aims to make Louisville a “city of Shakespeare.”
- Shakespeare events begin this month and continue throughout 2016.
- “Shakespeare’s writing is timeless – beautiful and poetic – and the city is honored to host this important celebration of all things from the Bard of Avon,” Fischer said.
- The First Folio, published in 1623, seven years after Shakespeare’s death, is the first collected edition of his plays, many of which were not published during his lifetime.
- When the First Folio arrives in Louisville, its pages will be opened to the most quoted line from Shakespeare and one of the most quoted lines in the world, “To be, or not to be,” from Hamlet. Accompanying the rare book will be a multi-panel exhibition exploring the significance of Shakespeare, then and now, with additional digital content and interactive activities. "...this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to come within inches of one of the most influential books in history,” said Penelope Peavler, President & CEO of the Frazier History Museum.
- First Folio! The Book that Gave Us Shakespeare premieres in Louisville at the Frazier History Museum on November 10 and will be free and open to the public. A schedule of programs, activities, and performances is available online at LFPL.org/WillintheVille. And you can follow the conversation on Twitter and Instagram using #WillintheVille.
