News You Can Use
Safety Drills @ Elmwood
We had a planned "fire drill” on: Monday, September 17th. A fire drill consists of us exiting the building and walking outside to a designated location out of harm’s way. At no time, is there any danger to the students or staff during a fire drill. We encourage you to please continue to have these conversations at home with your children and to reassure them that we practice these drills at Elmwood to keep everyone safe.
Winter Wear & Halloween Drive (Coming Soon)!
Coming soon, we will be collecting winter apparel and Halloween costumes for our students within the Elmwood community. This year, we will be posting our requests through a Signup Genius link (coming soon). We will be collecting snow pants, coats, hats, mittens, boots, scarves & Halloween costumes. If you have any of these items laying around your home, please set them aside as we will accept all new or gently used items during the week of Parent/Teacher conferences: October 4th & 5th. Thanks in advance for opening your hearts to others in need! *If your child is in need of any of these items mentioned, please call our office #630-420-6341 and we will connect you with our social workers.
Start with Hello Week, 9/24-9/28
Elmwood is pleased to announce our participation in Start With Hello week, a national initiative organized by Sandy Hook Promise, a national non-profit based in Newtown, Connecticut. Start With Hello is focused on empowering young people to create a culture of inclusion and social connection within our school and community. Students will participate in a lesson about including everyone and making new friends. Teachers will be provided with ideas for daily activities designed to promote taking action to create new friendships and creating a caring school community. We encourage you to participate by performing a random act of kindness with your child, asking your students about what they did in school to make a new friend or to show kindness, or have a conversation about what they can do when they see someone who is being excluded. Elmwood is proud to be a learning community that celebrates all of our students for their unique qualities and abilities. We are proud to participate in this initiative that will help us continue to foster that culture within our community.
Here is a link with more information about this initiative.
Watch D.O.G.S.
If you were not able to secure a Watch D.O.G.S date, there are several ways to volunteer at Elmwood. Upcoming activities include Fun Run, Movie Night, Book Fair, School Garden, Rock Climbing and Field Day (spring). If you want to volunteer, please SIGN UP! Movie night and rock climbing volunteer information will be distributed separately via Talk203 when available.
If you’d like to be added to the Watch D.O.G.S. wait list please email Megan Warty at meganwarty@gmail.com. Please include your name, child(ren)’s name, grade and teacher(s).
If you secured a volunteer date, below are program reminders. All of this information was included on SignUpGenius and will also be emailed to participants.
- Volunteer days begin at 7:45 am. Please arrive at the front desk with a valid state ID. Your child(ren) may arrive at 7:45 am with you. Your day will end at 1:00 pm.
- You will receive a reminder from SignUpGenius one week prior to your volunteer date.
- Please notify Megan Warty at meganwarty@gmail.com as soon as possible if you have a conflict with your volunteer date. You are not guaranteed another date, but we will try our best to help facilitate a change with another dad/father-figure.
- Do NOT switch dates with another dad without notifying Megan Warty. Elmwood customizes each dad/father-figure’s schedule. We must provide the school at least 48 hours’ notice of any changes to make certain the school and classroom teacher can accommodate as well.
- Dress comfortably! You’ll be running around with the students and standing a lot throughout the day.
- Lunch: most dads informed us they did not eat a lunch during the day since the schedule is busy but please feel free to bring snacks or pack a lunch. Snacks in the classroom must be nut-free.
- T-Shirts: All volunteers will wear a Watch D.O.G.S. t-shirt during their time at school. The school has a limited number of t-shirts available for volunteers, but to purchase your own shirt and/or a shirt for your child, click here.
HAVE FUN!!! Watch D.O.G.S are superstars at Elmwood – enjoy the day!
