Principal's Corner
The Week Ending 1-11-19
Dear OSS Technology Campus Families,
I hope everyone enjoyed their winter break. We had a great first week back at OSS!
The next PVO meeting will be on January 23rd at 6PM in the High School cafeteria.
Talent show auditions for 4-6th grade will be held next Tuesday and Thursday. Students can sign up for an audition time outside of Ms. Parrella's room.
Sincerely,
Michael Singleton
The Technology Campus is incredibly thankful for all of our faithful readers, and for that we would like to reward our families. Moving forward we will have a NEWSLETTER QUIZ located under the Principal's corner.
Quiz completion will automatically place your student into a drawing for a Dress Down Pass. Dress Down Passes will be awarded to 10% of entries for each building. The number of entries will directly effect the amount of prizes awarded for the week. Entries selected from the lottery must be correct upon review.
We hope that you have fun, and enjoy reading this week's edition! Entries are due the morning of Monday, January 28th.

Kindergarten
First Grade
Ms. Kelly’s class is happy to be starting the 2019 year on the right foot! We are reviewing our rules and expectations by focusing on the growth mindset. Our brains are capable of doing incredible things when we try our best! We are reading the story “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds and thinking of ways we can push ourselves to meet new goals in 2019. In math, we are reviewing our subtraction strategies. Even first graders have important resolutions, like reading more books or being faster at math. We are looking forward to meeting our goals!
This week in Ms. Molnar’s class we are learning all about animal groups. We are learning how to compare and contrast these groups and document how they are alike and different. In math, we are starting our subtraction strategies unit. We are enjoying our first week back!
Mrs. Beckman’s class is so happy to be back from a wonderful winter break! This week we read the non fiction text “Where Does Food Come From?” and learned about contractions ‘ll and ‘d. In math we began comparing numbers using greater than and less than symbols and comparing tens and ones place values. We also started a brand new social studies unit on the past, present, and future.
We are off to a great start in 2019 in Ms. DiNuzzo’s class! Students were greatly missed and I was so happy to see them return! =) This week in reading, we are learning about main idea. Main idea = topic + the point. Main idea is what the text is mostly about. In math, we are learning a variety of strategies to add multi-digit numbers. In science and social studies, we are learning about geography and the world around us. iReady testing will begin next Monday. Please ensure your child gets a good night's rest prior to testing. We look forward to seeing you next week!
Second Grade
After the long break, second-graders enjoyed relaxing at their AR party to celebrate their hard work! We are very excited to continue our learning journey in the new year. In Science, we have been learning about magnets and forces.
Below is Ms. Shirar’s class doing as small warm up to demonstrate how opposite poles attract. After being assigned a pole at random, the students sprung into action to create a magnetic chain with their bodies to beat the clock.
Next Wednesday and Thursday, second-graders will have their second i-Ready diagnostic testing in Reading. The Math i-Ready diagnostic will be on the following Thursday and Friday.
We hope that you join us at the OSES Literacy night on Thursday, January 24th. The second-grade team will guide you through the process of creating a story element fortune teller that you can take home with you!
Third Grade
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade is starting the new year off right! We are working hard and playing hard too! In Mrs. Michaud’s class, students have been reading informational and fiction text about World War II to start off their month-long Holocaust unit. They also experienced their first financial literacy lesson this week! Students learned how the level of education a person obtains correlates to the salary he/she earns. In Math, Mrs. Michaud’s class started a new unit on algebra and graphing. They have discussed how to plot, interpret, and find the average of fractional data expressed on a line plot. They also began exploring the concept of ordered pairs and graphing on the coordinate plane. All classes have been working hard on opinion writing, as well as starting new units on Forces of Motion in Science and the Florida Territory in Social Studies.
We are going on a field trip! We will be seeing a live performance of Ella Enchanted the Musical on February 19 at the Orlando Repertory Theatre. The cost is $18. Payment is due by Friday, February 1.

Orca's Core Values and character Education
Character Education has begun at OSES and we are having a great time learning our social skills at school and the students are learning how to use these tools successfully too! This year part of our Character Education curriculum we have introduced "Operation Impact" our goal is to share and show how our students are reaching out to the communities, families and other students to show their positive character traits.
Here are a few character traits:
- Kindness
- Empathy
- Trustworthy
- Reaching Out to Others
- Building Friendships
We want to see how your children are using their character traits outside of school and featuring them each week in our weekly newsletter!! This is a great way to spotlight your child's positive influence that they have in our community and school! We look forward to seeing your pictures and experiences.
Please send a few pictures and small description of your children's activity (encourage them to write it on their own too). Pictures must be handed in on Monday's in order to make it for the Friday newsletter. They can be sent in to your child's teacher or emailed to Mrs. Krygowski at katherine.krygowski@orlandoscience.org
We can't wait to see our wonderful students putting #Operation Impact to work in our community!!!

Final payments are due by December 13th.
Just a reminder that everyone receives two shirts for the trip down and trip back. Students will also receive the learning journal. We all fly out of Miami together on the same flight.
