SLCS District Update
June 9th, 2022
Superintendent's Update
Dear SLCS Families and Staff Members,
Hopefully this communication finds you enjoying a lovely Michigan evening. This will be our last “SLCS District Update” for this school year. We will send a communication once the 2022-23 calendar has been finalized. The calendar is established through the collective bargaining process in which we are currently engaged. We hope to have a detailed calendar very soon.
As a school community, we once again demonstrated tremendous resolve to navigate the challenges of the 2022 school year. For those who will be graduating or are retiring, we extend our appreciation for your contributions toward upholding the tradition of excellence associated with SLCS. We also want to wish each of you all the best as you greet the next phase of life. Please know that you will always have a home in SLCS.
For the rest of our SLCS family, we wish you a safe and enjoyable summer. With the new school year, we will experience a renewed energy and enthusiasm for all things SLCS. Look for exciting updates in August about the 2022-2023 school year.
SLCS Summer!
Steve Archibald
Superintendent
Congratulations Mrs. C...again!
Congratulations to Michele Chynoweth, aka Mrs. C, who was recently recognized as the Oakland Schools Support Person of the Year. She was recognized as the SLCS Support Person of the Year earlier this spring, so the additional honor is worth an extra shoutout. Congratulations.
Kindergarten Welcome Events 2022-23
Kindergarten welcome events for students and family will be held in August at each elementary school. Families are able to meet some of the school staff, take a quick building tour, learn about bus safety and meet other kindergarten students who will be attending the same school. The schools invite those students who are fully enrolled to attend these events. If you have been putting off completing your child’s kindergarten enrollment, we encourage you to finish that process before school staff leave for the summer. This ensures your family is contacted regarding the welcome events.
Students in our Junior Kindergarten are invited to attend a Junior Kindergarten event as well. If your child is signed up for Junior Kindergarten you should complete their paperwork as well.
Virtual Learning Opportunity for 2022-23
Our district entered into an agreement with another Oakland County school district. The other district is planning to continue their fully virtual learning program for next school year and sought partner districts. Under this agreement, our students remain South Lyon students but are able to attend a fully virtual program with synchronous instruction. Additionally, students from our district who enroll in this neighboring district’s virtual program are able to continue to participate in extracurricular activities and athletics with our district. If your family is seeking out a fully virtual learning experience for next school year but wishes to remain connected to our district, please contact your child’s principal as soon as possible to learn more.
Athletics
Good luck to the following teams still competing:
East Girls' Soccer tonight against Haslett at Fenton High School in the Regionals
SLHS Softball in the Regionals at Northville on Saturday
East Boys' Golf at the State Finals this weekend at GVSU
SLPD Training at Hardy
As an FYI, the South Lyon Police Department will be conducting an active shooter training at Hardy Elementary on July 12 from 5-11 PM.
Medication
We recognize that some students are able to attend regular school because of the effective use of medication in the treatment of chronic disability or illness. We are also aware some prescriptions require that medication be given while the individual is in attendance at school. Please see the SLCS website for paperwork regarding medication administration at school. New paperwork needs to be completed each year dated after July 1st of the school year the medication will be administered.
Please note that all medication from the 2021/2022 school year needs to be picked up by a parent by June 17, 2022. No medication can be kept over the summer. Any medication not picked up by June 17th will be disposed of by a school administrator.
Mental Health Awareness
If you or a loved one is experiencing a mental health disorder, You are not alone! Mental health is defined as a state of well-being in which every individual realizes their own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and feel able to contribute to their community. Family members play an important role in helping students cope with their emotions in a healthy way.
However, there are times where parents need the support and help from a professional in assisting their student in dealing with their mental health. Please do not hesitate to reach out if your student is struggling. There are many places that can help; your student’s school counselor, primary care physician, private therapist, New Oakland Family Centers as well as many more. The most important thing is, take the step to ask for help. It’s ok to reach out to multiple sources at once, many places may have a waiting list or are unable to see an individual right away. Seeking help from multiple sources could decrease the time it takes to be seen. Then once you ask for help, be consistent in following up with appointments, therapy plans and just advocating for your student. Neither parents nor students should have to suffer through this alone.
