Highlights From Last Week
I hope you all had a wonderful week! JUST A REMINDER, kindergarten does NOT have school on Thursday, April 10 and Friday, April 11. These days will be used to screen incoming kindergarten children. If you have a child that will be eligible for kindergarten and you have not registered yet, please call the school and schedule a time for your child to be registered and screened. Last week we focused on letters W and Z, we tapped" out letter sounds, and practiced nonsense words. Our featured author/illustrator was Frank Asch. The children loved his stories and learned how good readers think while they read. We also created class books with the writings from the stories we read. Our books focused on what we were thinking about during the story.
In math, we learned about number bonds with teens. We learned to look for a group of ten, circle it and to count the remaining numbers. We then break the big number into parts using ten as one number. This helped the children to visualize that a teen number is 10 plus another number. They are doing a wonderful job with teen numbers!

What We Are Learning This Week
In ELA, we will be focusing on letters Q and K this week. We will be "tapping out" words this week. This is a technique used to practice breaking words down by their sounds. This skill helps us to be better readers and writers! We will also practice reading nonsense words.
In Math, we will be focusing on teen numbers using number bonds, pictures and ten frames. It is important for the children to be exposed to the different math tools to help them learn. Each child is different and learns differently. Providing them with various tools will give them the ability to use whichever tool makes sense to them as they approach different math problems.
Reader's Workshop and our Featured Author/Illustrator
Our friend's will also have a writing component to go along with each of the stories that we read.
