Falcon Flash
September 9th, 2022
Dear Falcon Friends and Families,
Week two went incredibly smoothly as we settled into routines and delved deeper into academics. Students seem to understand what it means to truly be back at school, and as a whole conduct themselves with great respect and responsibility. On Wednesday this week, I traveled to each fifth grade classroom providing positive feedback on the leadership skills they are demonstrating for our younger students to follow. I could not be more happy and proud!
We still are working on our system to help students move faster through our lunch lines and will continue to make improvements along the way. Please understand that some of our students have not experienced this since March of 2020, and most have never experienced this at all because they were not in school yet. In the meantime we are practicing patience and flexibility.
The highlight of the week occurred today with our Welcome Back Spirit Assembly where students and staff performed grade level cheers and learned a new Forest Hills Spirit Cheer! Fun, excitement and a lot of laughter fill our gym in the first school-wide assembly in almost three years. It’s great to be back, and it’s great to be a Falcon!
Enjoy the weekend and take care,
Jim Mangan, Principal

New Application for School Volunteers
For the safety of children, volunteers are required to have an approved background check when volunteering in schools.
To help streamline compliance with state and school board policies, which require that all volunteers have background checks and knowledge of other board policies -- as well as state-mandated proof of vaccination (or a qualified exemption) -- we are introducing a new all-in-one volunteer application and approval process through ou Raptor Visitor Management System.
Submitting an online application initiates the background check process. Once submitted, applicants will receive an email upon approval of your background check and you will be given access through the onsite Raptor System at all schools. Please allow up to three weeks to process your approval.
Volunteers need to submit only one application for volunteering in all LOSD schools. Applications need to be submitted annually to capture changes in background checks, policies, and/or vaccination requirements.
Volunteer Application for LOSD
Thank you for applying promptly, and for your service to our students and schools. We are grateful for our volunteers.
3 Bees Garden
Starting Tuesday, 9/13, our 3 Bees Garden chairs will be in the garden to welcome students during lunch recess on Tuesdays (grades K/1/2) and Wednesdays (grades 3/4/5). We have harvesting, plant care, mindfulness, art, and more activities planned for the weeks until the rain overtakes us.
Parents who would like to help out during lunch recess time are encouraged to join us as well! Please remember to check in at the front office before heading around to the garden on Sunningdale.
Bus Passes
If your child is riding a bus with a friend, or taking a different bus for a playdate etc, please have your child bring a note or call the office and request a bus pass.
Bus drivers will not let children on a bus without a pass.
Thank you!
Counselor Corner
Dear Forest Hills Families,
September’s Social-Emotional focus is RESPECT. One way to think about RESPECT “is seeing value in all people and things and treating them with care.” Many people feel RESPECTed in different ways and we hope this month inspires discussions with your family about what RESPECT means to you and how you can practice it together.
RESPECT is one of three traits we will focus on throughout the year that encourages students to Be Kind. Throughout the school, students will be developing skills like perspective-taking, conflict resolution, and leadership. Demonstrating RESPECT is essential to re-establishing and nurturing our school community.
We believe involving families in our social emotional learning is incredibly important. Our school newsletters will include activities to build these skills at home, discussion starters, and fun challenges you can enjoy with your family.
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about our SEL curriculum. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions. I can be reached at drimmelh@loswego.k12.or.us.
Sincerely,
Hayley Drimmel
School Counselor
Fall i-Ready
This Fall, all students in Grades 1-5 will complete two online i-Ready assessments in class. One is for math and the other is for reading. i-Ready is a diagnostic assessment that will help us determine your child’s strengths and areas for growth, personalize their learning, and monitor their progress throughout the school year. i-Ready allows us to meet your child where they are and provides us with data to inform and tailor instruction to accelerate growth.
This is the first of three i-Ready assessments we give each year. In Lake Oswego, the Fall i-Ready window is open through September 16.
Tech Consent and Protection Plan
In order for students to use school district software or any technology resources (devices, digital textbooks, etc.), there are three actions that need to be completed at the beginning of each school year:
- A parent or guardian must provide consent for each student to use District software and resources
- A Parent/Guardian and each Student must agree to the Acceptable Use Policy
- Families must choose to enroll or decline participation in the Device Damage and Loss Protection Program ($20 annual fee per student).
