News from Panthers Headquarters
October 2016
From the Desk of the Principal
Hello Panther Families –
It is once again my pleasure to share highlights for this month. Our teachers have embraced the HSE21 Vision that I alluded to in last month’s Newsletter with special emphasis on Student-Centered Approaches. We will be showcasing such teaching & learning moments with ‘living’ bulletin boards both upstairs and downstairs where photos and captions will tell the stories of learning that are happening at HIJH. These moments are becoming the norm, and I’m excited for the future of our Panthers!
The month of October is a very busy month in ‘Panther Land’ as we have both a Professional Development ½ Day on 10/7 and a Professional Development full day for 7/8 teachers on 10/20 (part of the student fall break including 10/21). The teachers are delving into best practices of instruction related to our HSE21 initiative and College/Career Readiness. Also in October is the 7th grade Camp Tecumseh trip as the first half of 7th graders will leave from school on Monday, 10/3. They will return on Wednesday afternoon after the second half of 7th graders leave in the morning. In addition, the 5/6 Parent/Teacher Conference schedules will take place over 2 ½ weeks from 10/3 – 10/20. Teams will send out sign-up forms electronically to parents with many options available. We will also have three late nights until 7:00 on 10/17, 10/18, & 10/19 to accommodate our families. This is a great time to go over student work, discuss academic progress, and have productive dialogue with teachers.
October is also National Bullying Prevention Month. The staff at HSJH takes bullying and harassment of others very seriously, and with the explosion of social media, it has taken on a whole new dimension. We have taken a proactive approach by instilling a PAWS Anti-Bullying initiative the last Wednesday of every month. In lieu of CNN during 5th period (longer period due to lunches) or during designated 5/6 Team time, all students will view a video that was chosen in advance by our school PAWS Committee of teachers and administrators. Each monthly video will have a relevant theme related to various kinds of bullying that are directly related to the issues of middle grade students. Teachers will facilitate students in a guided discussion about the video. Our vision is that we will empower students to stand up and speak up rather than remain bystanders. We will also reiterate the pros/cons of social media and how to avoid the pitfalls that lead to issues at home and at school. By taking a proactive approach, we want to help students avoid potential problems and equip them with the knowledge and skills to be a good student and citizen. We appreciate your support throughout the school year.

Misplaced iPads and iCloud
Misplaced iPads and iCloud
Students sometimes misplace their iPads or get their iPad mixed up with another student's. There are a few cautionary steps you and the students can take ahead of time that will help in that situation.
1. Simply have the student's first and last name somewhere on the iPad case, preferably somewhere that can be seen without removing the iPad from the case. Found iPads should be turned in to the library or front office. We can then look up the student's schedule if we have their name and quickly get their iPads back to them.
2. Have the parent or student logged into iCloud and switch on the Find my iPad option on the student's iPad. (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT205362) Then if a device is misplaced, when iCloud is logged into the Find iPhone app on a different device, you can see where the misplaced device is roughly on a map, you can make it beep, and there are a few additional options as well.
