A Message From Our Principal

SES Families,

Thank you all for your support and enthusiasm as our school has gotten off to a great start to the school year! One of our goals is to provide timely and essential information to parents. You will receive updates from your child's teacher on a routine basis. We also will be sending out school wide information through our monthly newsletter, Hoofbeat News, and periodic quick reminders through the Colts Express News. Please take a few moments when information is sent out to stay informed about all that is taking place at SES.

It was great to see many of you at our annual "Back to School Picnic" last Thursday. We had a great turnout and nice weather! The PTA hosts many family events throughout the year. These are great opportunities to meet other school families and for students to make connections.

Two of our three Colts expectations are to "Do Our Best" and "Take Care of Each Other". We will be putting these expectations into practice as we do our best for all our students to learn essential standards in math. Teachers continuously collaborate within their grade level and with math interventionists to discuss best instructional practices and review assessment data. Many times, students may not quite grasp a concept the first time it is taught. Through our collaboration process, students may have a lesson taught or retaught from another teacher or math interventionist. Our staff wants to treat all students as our own students, and we will all be working together to ensure our students are growing. Please contact your child's teacher or administration if you ever have questions about math instruction or instruction in general.

Our office has received a few concerns in regards to traffic. Our school has grown by over 125 students since the first week of school last year with an enrollment of 879 as of September 3. This includes 30 more kindergarten students than we have had in years past. Our school administration, along with district administration, is looking at a plan to extend our school drive to get get an additional 40 plus cars off of Springfield Parkway, but that will take time. We appreciate your patience and understanding that adding this many new students is going to take longer for drop off and pick up. Please contact the front office if you are interested in information about bus transportation.

If I can ever be of assistance, please let me know. I'm happy to help. Thank you for your support for your child's education and Springfield Elementary!

Sincerely,

Peter Olinger, Principal

Big picture

Parents and families—this year’s main fundraiser is the Springfield Colts Fun Run! It’s a two-week program that kicks off with a pep rally on 9/17. Families will then gather pledges for every lap your student runs (30-35 laps) at the Springfield Colts Fun Run, which will happen on 9/26. This year our goal is to raise $35,000 for VR Goggles & Books, and we need your help! We’ve asked the experts at booster to power our fundraiser to make it easier, more profitable, and more fun.

Students will also experience an amazing character theme, Mindspark: Wild West! Booster’s most exciting theme yet combines s.t.e.a.m. skills (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) with character-building. While they're teaming up with the mindspark kids to save Dr. Shock, our students will learn five character traits that will help strengthen themselves and our world.

Donations will go toward VR Goggles & Books and the entire two-week experience. So please help our school by getting pledges from family and friends and entering them on funrun.com. Also, all families are invited to come out and cheer on our students at the Springfield Colts Fun Run. Thanks so much for your support!

Counselor's Corner

Meet your School Counselors! Mrs. Strayer will be the counselor for kindergarten, second, and fourth grade. Mr. Seibles will be the counselor for first, third, and fifth grade.

We are looking forward to starting up classroom guidance this month! In September our lessons will help students understand the role of their school counselor. We will also cover listening skills and what it means to be a colt through incorporating our school motto; colts choose to: do our best, be responsible, and take care of each other. In addition to classroom guidance, we will be running various groups throughout the year as well as meeting with students as needed. If you would ever like to refer your student to their school counselor, please do so by filling out this form- Please Click Here to Refer a Student to the School Counselor.

Notes from the Nurse

Another school year is well underway, and it is the start of an exciting year here at Springfield! According to FMSD policy, the health room will supply the following items for first-aid purposes: Vaseline, Saline Eye Wash, Aloe Vera and 1 % Hydrocortisone cream. If you do not wish for your child to be treated with these items, please provide your written response. As a reminder, the health room is designed to assist students with chronic health conditions and is an emergency station to care for minor injuries and illnesses that occur at school. Injures that occurred outside the school environment should be treated at home or by a health care provider prior to returning back to school.

Please ensure that you have provided the school with any needed information related to medical conditions and medication your child may need throughout the year. All medication should be in the original container, labeled with the student’s name and directions easily readable. This includes all over-the-counter medications as well as prescription medications. No medicine will be given unless it is brought in by the parent/guardian with the accompanying required medical forms. Please remember, the Student Nutrition Department and your child’s school will need medical documentation of any food related allergies. Please let your child's teacher or the school nurse know if there are ever any changes in long-term medications, medical conditions, or phone numbers throughout the year.

Please remember to send in dental permission forms if you would like your child screened at school.

All immunizations must be on record by September 17th or your student will not be allowed to attend school on the 18th and after until we have the certificate on file. Immunization certificates must be on a SC DHEC 2740 form.

If I can be of any assistance this year, please let me know. I hope everyone will have a happy and healthy school year!
