Principal's Weekly Update

RAISE Goal: to exhibit all of our values when representing the school

Te reo phrase of the week: mahia kia pēnei (do it like this)

Kia ora,

We had Harold the Giraffe join us on Monday. The students learnt some wonderful life skills in the Life Education classroom and have some follow up activities to complete next week. On Wednesday night we farewelled our amazing Year 8s. They are such a neat group of students, we know they’ll have a great time at the various high schools they head off to next year.

We again have some exciting trips lined up for our students next week. The seniors are off to the pools and Tawhiti Museum, while the juniors are visiting a Christmas themed house and the Water Tower. Thank you to our fantastic parents for supporting the school with transport and parent help to make these field trips possible.

Engagement Findings For Hawera Education

I will send out a separate notice later today that includes information relating to the engagement findings for Hawera education. Please take the time to read over the summary and send any questions or feedback to by 19th February 2021.

Room 1

Farewell and best wishes to our Year 8 Leavers.

You have been an incredible bunch to teach this year and I have loved every minute of it. You have all stepped up and taken on many leadership roles this year and made the most of the learning opportunities you have had - Well done, we couldn't be more proud of you!

I am positive Secondary School will be an amazing experience for you, keep putting your hand up and saying yes to all the opportunities that come your way.

Good luck!

Room 2

Wow...what a week! We started it off making Christmas decorations, students designing some awesome baubles to hang on their Christmas tree. We then had a visit from Harold in the Life Education truck. There was lots of discussion and learning about the brain, as well as the use of the internet and how we keep ourselves safe online. Finally, and it was the highlight of my week, we have left Room 2 and moved into the hall. It's a sad sight to see the classroom empty but we are looking forward to the upgrade and moving back into a brand new class. Bring on 2021!

Room 3

Thanks to some great weather and our amazing parents for a great trip to the Hawera water tower and Tawhiti Museum on Friday last week. We also went to the New Plymouth Aquatic Centre on Thursday this week and had a blast! Donna and Harold have been reminding us about how to be good friends on the Life Education truck and we have started the festive season off with some tree decorating. Another fantastic week with a great group of students.

Room 4

The end of the year is fast approaching and we have been working hard to get all our different things finished off. We have been creating surprise Christmas presents for our Christmas tree, which has been very exciting. We also had Harold from Life education come to visit the school. He has been reminding us what a good friend does and different ways we can strengthen our friendships. It is always such a delight going to see Harold.

Room 5

Wow what a great week we have had in Room 5! Harold came to visit!! We learnt all about the benefits of positive self talk. We have been working extra hard to make our superman brain big and strong by telling it great things such as 'you can do it' and 'you are great.' We also were lucky enough to have Katie Parry and Alyssa Barr come in and help us decorate Christmas cookies! It has been absolutely fantastic!

Room 6

Room 6 was very lucky yesterday to have Katie Parry make amazing Gingerbread Men and Christmas trees for us to decorate...which we did with great enthusiasm! Everybody was very engaged in their work and the finished products were amazing.

We can not thank Katie and her Christmas helper Alyssa enough for the fantastic experience they provided- and their time and materials. We are so lucky to have fantastic parents at Matapu School!
