What are we Learning?
Math: Students took a test this week over Module 13. Our next topic is data collection.
**Please be sure your child is working to practice his or her math facts each night!
ELA: Module 4: Arc 3: Lessons 14-22
After reading the first four parts of I Am Malala, students stepped back and explored the structure of this text. Having analyzed the connections between chapters throughout their reading of the book, students expanded their lens to the book’s first four parts. For the third Focusing Question Task of the module, students examined how the parts of the text fit into its overall structure and how each contributes to the development of the text’s central ideas. Students also engaged in a peer review to help them improve their use of sources in their research essay.
Science: Students took a test this week over Investigations 1-3 in our Diversity of Life unit.
Social Studies:
Essential Question
How did geography affect life in ancient China?
In the course of reading this lesson and participating in the classroom activity, students will
- describe the geography of China’s regions and analyze how each region’s physical features, climate, and vegetation affect daily life.
- create a relief map.
- record, analyze, and present geographic data.
- locate the Huang He Valley and explain why Chinese civilization originated there.
- explain how China’s geographic features isolated it from the rest of the world.
Memory Book
Hello 6th grade parents/guardians!
The Oakdale Community Club puts together a memory book for our graduating 6th graders. Please have your 6th grader fill out the questions on the form relating to their time as Oakdale Tigers.
Please know that we will not be using ALL of the answers of every student, but rather picking out a few key answers. We will, however, use their own words and will not be re-phrasing or adjusting the wording for the memory book.
The final question in the form is a request for 3 images of your child. Please make sure those images have ONLY your child, and do not include other students. Please label your files Name_Description so we can caption the photos in the memory book.
We would like this form back no later than March 15.
Please reach out to the 6th grade CC Committee with any questions!

Vocal Music Festival
6th grade families,
It is an annual tradition that all 6th grade students in Westside participate in what we call 6th Grade Vocal Music Festival. This event combines all 10 elementary schools in our district with singers from both the middle school and the high school for one special night of music-making. For many, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform with hundreds of other students.
This year, the festival will take place on Thursday, March 21st at 7:00 p.m. in the Westside High School gym. The performance will last about an hour. Because of the large number of people involved, there are logistics with this evening that are more complex than a traditional music program would entail. Below are the details you need to know.
Please attempt to arrive at Westside High School between 6:15 and 6:30 on the night of Thursday, March 21st.
Please park in the main lot, if possible. This will allow sixth grade families to have preferred seating in the gym, as well as preferred parking. Middle and high school students and families are being asked to arrive later, so please do everything you can to arrive between these times.
We are encouraging students to dress nicely, if possible. Nice pants, shirts, dresses, skirts, etc.
Please let me know if you or your family have additional questions. Our students have been working hard to learn four different songs that we are excited to share with you next month!
Thank you for supporting our students in music,
Parker Christensen
