March Best Practices Celebrations
Check out some great happenings in your colleagues classrooms in this month's Best Practices Shout Outs!
Wagram 1st Grade Challenging Assignments
Students in our first grade classes with Ms. Driggers, Mrs. Brink, Ms. Jamison have been learning about standard OA.1 in math “Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, putting together, taking apart, and comparing with unknowns in all positions.” They were provided with a subtraction equation. Students were challenged with the assignment to create a word problem that would align with their subtraction sentence. After finishing, they had to use the “take from 10” strategy to show a pictorial representation of how to solve their problem. Students took turns exchanging their products and solving each others’ problems.
Spring Hill Word Wall
In Mr. Oswald's 7th grade science class, students are studying the human body and organ systems. This word wall is interactive and helps the students to make connections with visuals and terms. In addition, the color coding helps to chunk the material.
South Scotland Interactive Anchor Chart
In Ms. Wood's 2nd grade ELA class, students are studying character traits. This anchor chart is a great example of "interactive" where the students contribute examples to the chart using sticky notes.
South Scotland Assessment Prompt
In Ms. Coughenour 3rd grade math class, students complete an assessment prompt where they place stickies with their "Aha!", "Huh?", and "I care why." This is a great example of holding students individually accountable for recent instruction in a learning activity. Furthermore, this assessment prompt provides quick formative assessment that the teacher can reflect on and modify instruction as needed.
Laurel Hill First Grade
In Ms. Hixson's 1st grade class, students recently created a cause and effect matching game for their ELA final assignment. This quality assignment included higher order thinking and real world application. This was a great "out of the box" assignment that required students to use their application, synthesis, and creative thinking skills.
North Laurinburg Math Wall
In Mr. Ritchey's math class, a word web word wall links mathematical vocabulary. This is a great example of a word wall that organizes and categorizes important terms that students should know and use.
