2019-2020 Teacher of the Year- Jeff King!
Meet our Teacher of the Year!
Mr. King is a graduate of Friendswood High School and Texas A&M University in 2007 with a B.S. degree in Urban Forestry. He worked for Davey Tree for 5 years as a certified Arborist
After a volunteering with a youth ministry YoungLife, Jeff had an opportunity to take over the 21st Century after school program at a Jr. High in Richardson, Texas. This decision to change careers led to a greater passion to teach and lead middle school students. In 2015, he obtained his teaching certification from Texas Teachers and spent his first year teaching (2015-2016) at Alex W. Spence Talented/Gifted Academy in Dallas, Texas.
In 2014, Jeff married his wife, Heather, and they moved back to Friendswood in 2016. They now have 2 daughters ages 2 and 3. Jeff is in his 4th year of teaching 8th grade science and coaching football and soccer at Harby. He loves this school and the opportunity he has each day to teach students, not only science, but life lessons and skills they need to be successful in their academics and beyond.

FAQs
I have seen my child's STAAR reports, what do the different levels mean?
MASTERS GRADE LEVEL
* Performance in this category indicates that students are expected to succeed in the next grade or course with little or no academic intervention. Students in this category demonstrate the ability to think critically and apply the assessed knowledge and skills in varied contexts, both familiar and unfamiliar.
MEETS GRADE LEVEL
** Performance in this category indicates that students have a high likelihood of success in the next grade or course but may still need some short-term, targeted academic intervention. Students in this category generally demonstrate the ability to think critically and apply the assessed knowledge and skills in familiar contexts.
APPROACHES GRADE LEVEL
Performance in this category indicates that students are likely to succeed in the next grade or course with targeted academic interventions. These students are not quite at grade level and may have some gaps. Students in this category generally demonstrate the ability to apply the assessed knowledge and skills in familiar contexts.
DID NOT MEET GRADE LEVEL
Performance in this category indicates that students are unlikely to succeed in the next grade or course without significant, ongoing academic intervention. Students in this category do not demonstrate a sufficient understanding of the assessed knowledge and skills.
How can parent/guardians help with major testing or even campus presentations?
-Encourage students to do their best! Reduce anxiety by explaining the test will measure their growth to help teachers and our school to reflect and adapt or instruction for the next year. In addition, this information will allow the campus to begin tutorials on skills students may have struggles with and extend those skills in which students mastered.
-Encourage students to get plenty of sleep and eat in the morning to help get their day started. Discourage the use of technology the evening before a major exam/presentation.

Coronavirus (COVID 19)
Alvin ISD’s health and well-being of our students and staff are our top priorities. In response to the growing conversations surrounding the Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have shared information over the past few weeks from the CDC and helpful tips for reducing the spread of illnesses. For more information regarding the preventative measures being recommended, please visit our website at www.alvinisd.net/healthupdate.
As of today, March 6, 2020, the CDC has identified four countries for which it has issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice. A Level 3 Travel Health Notice is one that recommends that travelers avoid all non-essential travel to the particular country. The four countries are China, Iran, South Korea, and Italy. A person who travels to or through those countries while a Level 3 Travel Health Notice is in effect is to stay home and monitor his or her health for 14 days after the person leaves that country. We encourage everyone in our community to go to the CDC’s website for factual, up-to-date information regarding COVID-19. The following is guidance from the CDC to consider before traveling:
See CDC traveler’s health notices at https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel for up-to-date guidance and recommendations relating to travel to specific countries.
See information for travelers visiting countries where there are confirmed cases of COVID-19 at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/travelers/index.html.
Because this situation is changing rapidly, before you travel, we encourage you to check the website for the CDC to find updated guidance for your destinations as well as for those countries you may travel through on the way to your destinations. Level 3 Travel Health Notices may be posted for other countries at any time.
With the COVID-19 information focused on prevention, as a school district, we are closely monitoring the situation and taking guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Texas Department of Health Services and Brazoria County Public Health as to what action to take and when.
With Spring Break next week, we understand that many families may be traveling. The CDC provides resources and recommendations that may assist you. We encourage families to use the CDC tools to make informed travel decisions that are best for them.
In addition to this, we have asked students and staff to report any international travel to the campus nurse. We have also implemented a Travel History Enrollment Form for new students.
Region 4 Education Service Center has been in consultation with the Harris County Public Health (HCPH) about a variety of issues concerning COVID-19 and the operation of our public schools. The HCPH has advised that students and staff traveling to or through any of the countries with a Level 3 Travel Health Notice should comply with the recommendation to stay home and monitor their health for 14 days after leaving the identified country. The four countries of China, Iran, South Korea and Italy are currently under a Level 3 Travel Health Notice. This situation is fluid and may change with very little notice in the coming weeks. We encourage you to access the information noted above from the CDC anytime you intend to travel outside of the United States in the near future while this public health emergency is in effect.
We will continue to receive information from public health authorities about COVID-19. Based on current information, basic health practices can protect against the spread of COVID-19:
• Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Avoid touching one’s eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Stay home when sick.
• Cover your mouth and nose with the inside of your elbow when you cough or sneeze.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.
The district also has a coronavirus tab, which encompasses other important health information and links to the CDC and Texas Department of State Health Services websites as well. Visit www.alvinisd.net/healthupdate for additional information.
Your partnership with us for the health and safety of all members of our school community is truly appreciated. I hope that you will take time during the break to rest, relax, rejuvenate and have a little fun!
Thank you,
Carol Nelson
