SUSTAINABILITY
Bottled Water VS Tap Water
Sustainability
Sustainability means maintaining the resources we have for the future generations.
What do YOU Think is Better? Tap Water or Bottled Water?
Bottled Water
In the year 2005, over 7,200,000 gallons of bottled water was consumed by people worldwide. In 2006, over 8,000,000,000 gallons of bottled water was consumed worldwide, creating a 10% increase just from the previous year.
Glorified Tap Water
It is true that some bottled water comes from sparkling springs and many other sources, but over 25% of what comes in those plastic bottles are from a municipal supply. Companies like Aquafina, Nestlé Pure Life and Dasani has all began to reveal their water sources. Aquafina states on their labels that their H2O comes from public water sources. Nestlé Pure Life will indicate whether their water was extracted from public, private or deep well sources. Dasani, does not state it on their labels but acknowledges it on their website that they draw from local water.
The Disgusting Truth
80% of the 50 billion bottles we produce and consume annually end up in landfills. That equals to about 40 billion bottles each year. 17 million barrels of oil are used in the production of bottled water each year. Given the current average salary in developed countries, buying bottled water may seem as if its nothing. It may come off as convenient and not at all expensive, but when you compare tap water to bottled water, it would be obvious that the costs of bottled water is 1,000 times compared to tap water.
What Can You Do?
Given our current global situation involving water, there are ways we can use the remainder of the water we have left sustainably. These ways could be:
- Taking shorter showers
- Conserve water by using drip irrigation, allowing farmers to save up to 60% compared to other types of irrigation
- Bring your own water bottle to limit to amount of plastic bottles you consume
