Reading Workshop
We are beginning Lesson 3 of Journeys and by the end of next week, your child will know a lot more about Communities. We will look for answers to the question, “Why might an author write a story?” We’ll read Henry and Mudge Under the Yellow Moon, a realistic fiction selection about Henry and Mudge exploring their community in different ways. We’ll also read Outdoor Adventures, a selection of e-mails between a girl and her grandmother as they discuss the seasonal changes in their communities.
Target Vocabulary: woods, turned, tips, chipmunks, busy, picked, south, grew
Phonics Skills: Words with long a, (gate), long i (mine); VCVe spelling pattern; hard and soft sounds for c (car/cent)
Vocabulary Strategy: Multiple-meaning words
Comprehension Skill: Author’s purpose – understanding why an author writes a book
Comprehension Strategy: Analyze/evaluate - explain how you feel about the text and what makes you feel that way
On Tuesday, the students will have their first spelling test. It will focus the consonant-vowel-consonant short vowel spelling pattern. They will be giving one and two syllable words that we have been practicing along with some common high frequency words. The high frequency words will be: does, with, comes, children, went, next, make, use, family, bring. Your child should be familiar with these and able to hear or break the sounds in each word.
Writing Workshop
The students will have a chance to plan, write, edit, and publish an original narrative story. They will have two days complete it. When they are finished, the students will celebrate their stories with one another. Then we will move our focus to opinion writing. We will begin this unit with a class discussion and define "opinion" using the story In My Opinion. The boys and girls will begin by writing an opinion statement followed by personal ideas or facts to support their opinion. Throughout this process, they will be encouraged and expected to write in complete sentences with capitals at the beginning of each sentence and ending punctuation.
