Tustumena Staff Newsletter
Week of February 25
From Parent Newsletter
Greetings Tustumena Families,
It was great to see so many of you at the Sixth Grade Mighty Meatball fundraiser last Friday night. Between the dinner and the auction the kids raised over $2000 toward their trip. Thank you for your support.
The schoolyard habitat project still has about 15 cords of wood not spoken for. The cost is $50 per cord (5 cord limit) for families who qualify for our lunch program and $75 per cord for others. I will be putting a poster up at the post office this week to try to get the rest of it spoken for so we can send the names to the Borough for the permits. We look to be ready for cutting by March 9th.
Lynx Tracks field trips are coming up soon, that means the end of the quarter is coming up too. The 3rd quarter officially ends March 8th but the last day for the kids is March 7th, the same day we will be having the 6th grade vs. Staff basketball game. On March 8th the agenda for the teacher will be “collaboration- working together to improve student learning.”
Our Site Team has officially adopted their vision statement, “ Tustumena School is the center of the Kasilof Community.” I believe this vision is being realized already. For example, last Tuesday, after school, I looked out into the parking lot at around 5pm and saw that it was full of cars. When I looked at the building schedule it was clear why it was full. There were approximately 120 people here. Between Boys and Girls Club, kids basketball, staff exercise class, and cross country ski club this place was hopping. This facility is truly being used to fill the needs of the community it serves and with Archery Club, kids soccer teams, and the continuing growth of the Boys and Girls Club (56 kids), and after school exercise classes there is no end in sight.
Our staff has also adopted a vision/mission statement to use as our guiding principle: At Tustumena, we never stop adapting. It takes talented staff, making thousands of decisions every day to provide an engaging and meaningful education for each individual student to prepare them for their future. As we begin to prepare for next year we will continue to check decisions with this statement. We know many of the jobs (lives) we are preparing our children for, haven’t even been invented yet so modeling and teaching the skill of adapting is vital.
Just a reminder this is the last hard copy of the newsletter that will be distributed to every student. From this point forward, hard copies will be available by request and also at the post office.
Spring pictures are coming up at the end of March (March 26) and we will be putting together the yearbook by the end of April. There will be a pre-order form coming home so we can have a good estimate of how many copies of the yearbook we will need. Please be sure to send the form back in if you want a yearbook because there will be very few extras. The cost is yet to be determined but should be between $12 and $15. Even if you do not wish to order pictures or a yearbook, we will be taking pictures of all the kids.
Thank you for all you do for the kids.
Doug Hayman
World Record???
I know... it's not safe to see how many grapes he can put in his mouth, but it was funny.
Just plain good kids.
Happy faces are pretty common in the lunch room.
And a little bit silly.
When the sixth grade girls are not being dramatic, they seem to have more fun.
