Dear CST Family,
This past week our girls' basketball teams completed their season, both with wins over Pioneer Trail on Thursday. This capped off a shortened season with 9 games schedules. Our boys begin their season with tryouts on Monday and will also compete in a shorter 9 game season. We learned last week our performing arts groups will be able to hold concerts/shows later this semester, even if limited seating is available. We're excited for these opportunities for our students and look forward to more and more "normalcy" as the semester unfolds...fingers crossed!
While we are able to attend in person, compete, and perform, it's important we're all still doing our part to prevent illness and/or the need to quarantine due to direct exposure. Thank you for all you have done to support us in this effort already and I continue to be proud of our students for how well they have done following our mitigating guidelines.
Finally, parents of 6th and 7th graders received enrollment information on Thursday in lieu of an in-person presentation. Please reach out to your child's counselor if you have any questions about enrollment. As a reminder, your child will receive the same information this week during one of their classes. Our 8th grade students received high school info from our counselors this past Thursday and Friday. It's that time of year!

Snow Day Information (1/22 email)
Below are details regarding inclement weather procedures. This info has been in the Weekly Wildcat but there are additional details below. This will be repeated in the next newsletter…
If there’s closure due to inclement weather
- Both remote and in-person students will follow the attached half day bell schedule.
- All in-person middle school students will check into their Cat time at 7:50am. Remote students will log in beginning 1st hour.
- In-person students that were scheduled to be on-site that day will then follow the attached schedule from 7:50 a.m. to 11:15, checking into each class. Those students will then engage in asynchronous learning for the remainder of the school day.
- In-person students that were scheduled off-site that day will continue with their asynchronous class as scheduled, after checking in with their academic extension class at 7:50am.
- Staff will be teaching from home.
Should the weather be especially extreme, the district may call an inclement weather shut down with no school for students. In this scenario, students would not be required to log into remote learning on this day. This will be clearly designated.
- Middle school students will continue to follow the published hybrid calendar in both snow day scenarios (i.e. A/B days will not shift due to inclement weather; we will remain with the published calendars—also attached to this email).
How to Stay Informed
- When the chance for severe or inclement weather looms, we will only post the cancellation of school, athletic events and other activities. We will not post when school, athletic events and activities are proceeding as scheduled.
- If school is canceled or a remote learning day is called due to snow or bad weather, the information will be available in the following formats:

6th and 7th Grade Enrollment Information (1/21 email)
It’s enrollment time! In the coming days, your child will be receiving enrollment information for their 2021-22 school year. Since we are unable to have an in-person parent event at this time, we are providing resources virtually to replicate the main portion of our in-person event. We hope this will help as you work with your child on enrollment. Please note: this email is informative only—you do not need to print the forms as students will receive instructions and a color-coded (by grade) form to fill out for this process. Please reach out with questions, but you can also plan on live Zoom sessions with counselors on Monday, 2/8 from 3:30-4:30pm and Tuesday, 2/9 from 4:30-6:30pm. The Weekly Wildcat newsletter will publish this same info as well as updates, Zoom links and reminders over the next few weeks.

Yearbook Purchase Deadline EXTENDED to 1/29!
The deadline for purchasing a yearbook for the 2020-2021 school year has been extended to Friday, January 29th. Parents may choose one of the following options to purchase a yearbook:
1) Online: Log in to the same Touch Base website you used to enroll your student at the beginning of the year.
- Click on your Student's name.
- Click 'Items at Student's School'.
- Click 'Optional Items'.
- Scroll to Yearbook and select 'Buy' to add to your cart.
2) In-Person: You may send cash or check to school with your student, or you may drop it off yourself in the front office.
- CHECKS: Made out to USD 233 with student name and ID in the memo of the check.
- CASH: Please send exact change if purchasing with cash and include your student's name and ID with your payment.
3) Credit cards may also be used to purchase a yearbook in the front office, but it is subject to the availability of the Bookkeeper to process. Credit cards cannot be accepted over the phone.
IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PURCHASED A YEARBOOK for your student, you may view their Purchase History online by doing the following:
- Log in to the Touch Base website: https://ks-olathe.intouchreceipting.com
- Click on your student's name.

We are currently at 274 yearbooks purchased to-date. This is significantly lower than our student body count. As this has been a year of constant change, it is easy to overlook a task such as this. We appreciate you taking a moment to determine if you have purchased a yearbook for your student.
Snack Bar at Lunch Opens Tuesday!
We are now able to have an open snack bar for students during lunch...this is a HUGE celebration for our students who have been asking all year. The meals provided are still at no cost but all snack bar items require purchasing and money on their student account. You can add money to your child's account as normal through our Touch Base system. A communication with a reminder and further details will be sent out Monday from our bookkeeper, Andrea Wescott.
Students need to have their student ID to purchase items.

Enrollment season is upon us! I will be in and out of your students Science class over the course of the next few weeks, starting with next week for one for your students “home” days. On one of their “home” days they will be watching a video on what high school credits are and what they need to graduate. This is simply informational as we will revisit this when I am in Science with them to talk about enrollment on Jan 21 & 22. A Message from Mrs. Silkett: 7th grade Families
It is hard to believe that we are already halfway through this unique and challenging school year. Many things have changed, and we all have had to become more flexible and adapted to a life that is completely different than last year. However, time marches on and some things stay the same, and yes, it's that time of year again - enrollment.
We want you to know that your counseling team (Mrs. Rodden and Ms. Silkett) will be presenting enrollment information in your child's social studies classes on January 25th and 26th. Students will complete the enrollment process online at home with their families. However, they will also be expected to complete the enrollment form, which requires a parent/guardian's signature.
We default to these sheets if there is an issue with the online enrollment or if there is a discrepancy in the course requests. You will want to watch for the YELLOW enrollment form to come home the day of your child's presentation. Remote students will complete a digital PDF. This will be available on the CST website, Ms. Rodden and Ms. Silkett's website in Studentvue/Parentvue, and the newsletter. This form must be returned via a parent or guardian's email. This is how we will verify that parents agree with the course requests made by the student since a signature is not possible in this format. Given this fact, we will not accept forms sent through a student's email account. Additionally, there will also be an enrollment presentation for parents on January 21st. Details will be released soon.

Boys' Basketball Tryouts
Boys' interested in playing basketball this winter should contact Coach Reed or Coach Boyd. A meeting was held last week to share details. Physicals must be on file to tryout and can be turned into the front office.

Cheer and /or Dance Team Tryouts
Anyone interested in trying out for the cheer and/or dance team, please use the following google classroom code for information- c53k2xd. On google classroom, it is important to fill out the dance and cheer tryout form and turn in the permission slip. All other forms are purely informational. Our in person meeting is Wednesday, January 27th and Thursday, January 28th during morning CAT time.

REMINDER: Carryout Meal Service Change
Beginning January 6, middle and high school students will return to the hybrid learning mode. Due to the number of employees required in buildings for meal service, the carryout meal format will return to DAILY service at the 10 middle schools instead of the Tuesday & Friday service schedule.
One important change to the return to daily carryout meal service will be the addition of Saturday & Sunday meals to the Friday carryout meals.
Carryout meals will again be available at each middle school from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
Please remember to complete a Free/Reduced meal benefit application any time your family income changes. If approved for meal benefits, a number of other fee discounts are available from the school district, school bus company, and other community organizations. A plan is currently being developed by the Kansas Department for Children and Families for a second round of Pandemic-EBT cards. This additional food assistance will be available to those approved for Free/Reduced meal benefits later in the spring semester after DCF’s plan is approved by USDA. Sources of Strength Encouragment
SOURCES OF STRENGTH
New to CST a year ago in the 2019-20 school year, Sources of Strength continues with teacher sponsors and CST student leaders. Read more about this program below...
Sources of Strength is a student-run program, with a little help from teacher advisors, that uses a fun, team-building focused style of learning to encourage open discussions about the “sources of strength” in a student’s life. Sources of Strength targets the social-emotional wellbeing of our CST students. The program helps students be more aware of various strengths in their lives and how they can harness those strengths during challenging times of their lives, especially for more vulnerable students. Sources of Strength teaches students how to identify strengths such as family support, positive friends, mentors, healthy activities, generosity, spirituality and mental health.
Our peer leaders will utilize CAT time to spread the word of Sources of Strength. We have an incredible group of students from all grades who will provide support and hope to the CST student family. This year, Sources of Strength will put on a variety of campaigns, or events, to help CST students learn about finding strength in their lives. Some events will be small and personal, while others will involve the entire school and community. Stay tuned!
What I Do When I Arrive--First—refer to our traffic pattern for car rider drop off
--Students enter the front entrance or event entrance—car or walker
--Bus riders will be dropped off at the event entrance (and load at the event entrance)
--We encourage all walkers and car riders to arrive after 7:30, but doors open when buses arrive (approx. 7:20)
--If students are in the building BEFORE 7:30 they will go to 1 of 2 locations depending on grade level
- 6th Grade will sit spaced out by Cat teacher in the auditorium (signs posted)
- 7th and 8th will take a different side of the bleachers in the main gym
- If students want breakfast (see breakfast/lunch info below), they will go to the MPR to pick up the grab-and-go breakfast where they’ll eat in their designated location (gym/aud)
--If students arrive AFTER 7:30 they go straight to the their Cat time classroom.
- If students want breakfast they can go to the MPR to pick up their breakfast to take to their Cat classroom to eat
What do "home hybrid" students do?
- Students from home will STILL need to log into their Cat time via Zoom at 7:50am to have attendance taken
- At 7:50, students log into Zoom with their Cat teacher, they’ll hear AM announcements, receive any pertinent info for the day, then be dismissed. They will not need to log in for the rest of the day.
- Students will need to access their LMS (StudentVUE/Google classroom/etc.) for the day’s assignments where they complete at their own pace.
- Students at home will only check in with teachers 1 time during the day—7:50am during Cat timed
What changes will occur with REMOTE students?
- Remote students will still log in beginning at 8:17 (1st hour) as they've been doing
- The day will not change except an adjustment at lunch time--their teachers will provide more details
- Please feel free to reach out to one of your child's core teacher/s if you have specific remote questions
What do students do with all their “stuff”?
- Students will not be issued lockers (except in PE and music) and will be permitted to carry their backpack with them during the day
- Students are encouraged to travel efficiently—lunch, device, essential supplies—jackets/coats carried as well
- PE lockers will be issued and is a place to keep their PE shoes and PE uniform
- INSTRUMENTS: May be dropped off in their music room where one of our teachers will be there to receive instruments
- Drop off location in both entries upon arrival
--Students can keep their cell phones in their backpack but we ask that volume is turned off
- Normally, phones are asked to be kept in lockers from 7:50-3:10
- If cell phones cause distraction they may be kept in the front office for return at the end of the day
--Please remind students to fully charge their device
- Students are encouraged to have an non-permanent identifier on their charging cord (i.e. masking tape with name, label—NOT marker, duct tape, etc.)
SNOW DAY REMINDERS
12/4 Building Email: Snow Day Follow up
In follow up to the inclement weather email from the district (below) is the bell schedule middle schools will operate on in an “inclement weather remote learning day”. A few key notes from the email:
• Both remote and in-person students will follow the half day schedule
• Both remote and in-person students will check in each hour via Zoom
• Remote learning students do not check into Cat Time.
• Inclement weather may result in a “traditional snow day” where students
are not expected to log in or attend class
• Communication of many forms will announce any day impacted by
Cat: 7:50-7:59 AcExt (in-person students only)
CST Hybrid Procedures and Guidelines
As a district we follow county guidelines. Wearing masks and washing hands will be the expectation.
A direct exposure is defined as: no mask, within 6 feet, for more than 10 minutes.
Anyone with what is considered a “direct exposure” would need to quarantine based on this criteria. While other variables may play into a situation, the emphasis on wearing a mask is not just safety and health, but for continuity of education by avoiding a need for quarantine for our students and staff.
ALL Students will have a Daily Check-in
- All students will have attendance taken daily
- Remote students will have attendance taken as normal in their classes throughout the day beginning with 1st hour
- Hybrid students in the building will also have attendance taken in each of their hours
- Hybrid students working from home will log into their Cat class at 7:50am to have attendance taken, hear morning announcements, and receive directions for the day. These students will then log off Zoom to continue their learning from home.
- Masks are required in the building (gaiters are okay but need to be 2 layers)
- Students should bring their own masks, but disposable masks are available if needed
- Temperature checks will not occur at the building per updated guidelines (see "nurse update" section below for more health-related information)
- Hall lockers will not be issued; students will carry their backpack and all items with them during the day
- Music and PE lockers will be issued
- Car riders and walkers are strongly encouraged to arrive after 7:30am where they’ll go to their Cat class (students may drop off instruments in their music classroom)
- The building will not open before 7:20am (approximate time of bus drop off)
- The main gym bleachers will be used for 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students prior to 7:30 (Students will be spaced apart and seated based on Cat teacher)
- Breakfast will be grab-n-go in the MPR--after 7:30am students go to their Cat room
- Refer to the traffic pattern (below) for car line arrival and pick-up procedures
- There will be 5 lunch periods at CST (refer to hybrid bell schedule)
- 6th grade will eat during 4th hour, 7th and 8th will eat 5th hour. The 8th grade lunch will be split due to its higher numbers.
- Students will be expected to wear a mask upon entering/exiting and while seated after finished eating.
- Hand sanitizer stations will be set up in the lunch lines with distancing markers as a guide.
- In order to create a stable group, students will have assigned seats by class in alpha order--consistent day-to-day
- Students will sit in a checker board fashion, 4 to a table
- Students will enter the MPR through the doors closest to the auditorium and exit through the doors by the bathrooms.
- Passing periods will be 4 minutes in length
- Restrooms are available while limiting bathroom crowds (appox. 4 per restroom at a time)
- Markings on the floor will guide students to stay to the right during passing and to keep moving from class to class
- Hand washing or sanitizing is encouraged and available hourly
- Distancing will be followed to the best of our ability in classrooms
- Students will wear masks
- Desks will be sanitized a minimum of 2 times per day
- Hand sanitizer is available in every classroom
- Students will be issued lockers strategically spaced out in the locker room
- Students will dress out for class--students may wear school issued clothes or clothes brought from home (see document below if you'd like to buy CST PE clothes)--PE teachers will share expectations in class.
- Masks will be worn in PE, but teachers will work with students for appropriate times to get a break from masks (i.e. outside and distanced, swimming, etc.)

IMPORTANT NEWS FROM NURSE ROSS
I have some new updates for you from the Johnson County Health Department. If your student tests positive for Covid, your student needs to stay home and isolate from the family for 10 days from the onset of symptoms. That has not changed. If your student was exposed to Covid, it can take 14 days for Covid symptoms to begin for your student. That has also not changed.
This is what has changed: it is possible that your student can return to school earlier than 14 days if he/she was exposed to Covid. It can be confusing when dealing with Covid exposures or getting ill with Covid. Your school nurse can help you with this! Give me a call or send me an email and I will figure out the quarantine dates, help you figure out where to get a Covid test, and figure out when your student can return to school. Here are some tips to help us stay healthy at school!
You need to wear your mask over your nose and mouth while you are inside. Please don’t play with it or touch it. No masks with vents or valves are allowed. "Gaiter" masks must be double layered.
Make sure to cover your cough or sneeze, and afterward make sure to wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands. Make sure to briskly rub your hands together until they are dry. Wash or sanitize your hands throughout the day.
Please bring your water bottle every day. It is important to stay hydrated. There are places in the building where you can refill your water bottle.
We would like for you to take care of your needs in the classroom as much as possible. To enable you to do this, we recommend that each student carries a small hygiene kit in their backpack. Items to include in this bag could be lip balm, Kleenex, feminine products, lotion, contact solution, band-aids, extra masks, cough drops, a day's supply of Tylenol or Ibuprofen in the original containers. These items are not to be shared with others. Please tell your parents if you use your supplies and restock your kit at home.
Make sure to tell your parents if you feel sick and stay home from school. It is important to let the school know if you have been around someone who has tested positive for Covid. If you feel sick at school, tell your teacher who will notify the nurse if needed.
By using these tips, we can all stay healthy.

Please be reminded of the remote classroom best practices (PDF below). As was suggested prior to the school year, reviewing with your child can help promote a successful end to semester 1.
Please note: Zoom cameras should be turned on unless instructed by the teacher to turn off. This allows for teacher-to-student and student-to-student interaction and also helps promote higher levels of engagement while also maintaining the climate and culture of the classroom.

Winter Sports and Communication Updates
As the Olathe Public Schools works to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, we are continuously working with state and local health officials on the best practice and expertise for keeping students and staff safe. As new evidence is identified, local health departments and their collaborating school districts respond by updating guidance and practices. We want to make sure to share with parents the latest updates.
At this time, the Olathe Public Schools will move forward with winter sports while following the KSHSAA mitigation protocols. The district will continue to work closely with the Johnson County Department of Health and Environment. We will continue to review information and data provided by our community health partners.
Fever for Secondary Level
Fever (100o or greater) is now listed as a primary symptom for secondary students rather than a secondary symptom. This means that any student with a fever will need to be evaluated for COVID by a medical health care provider OR provide a negative molecular (PCR) COVID test OR remain out of school until they have met the symptomatic recovery criteria for COVID-19. Symptomatic recovery criteria for COVID-19 is: it has been 10 days since the onset of their symptoms AND they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours AND they have significant improvement in their symptoms.
We realize this is a change. Please understand using the guidance provided by medical experts will help to keep students and staff safe.
COVID Test Requirements
Not all COVID-19 tests may be utilized to determine that an individual does not have COVID-19. There are two types of diagnostic tests: Molecular and Antigen (commonly known as a rapid test). https://www.fda.gov/media/140161/download
- Molecular/ viral testing (PCR). These tests take longer (some are same day and some take several days) because they must be sent to a lab for processing, but are more accurate. These are collected by nasal swab and some saliva tests are now available. JCDHE currently offers free PCR tests by nasal swab. This is not the deep nasopharyngeal collection method so is not as uncomfortable as the original tests. Results are typically available in 48 hours or less.
- Antigen or Rapid diagnostic tests (RDT). These tests are not designed to detect viral DNA but look for a protein on the virus. The results are rapid because the specimen is read on-site. However, they have a high enough percentage of false negatives that negative results are not accepted from symptomatic individuals for return to school without a confirmatory PCR test, a physician’s alternate diagnosis, or remaining out of school for the full recovery period for COVID-19 (10-day minimum and fever-free without medicine for 24 hours and symptoms improvement).
Keeping parents informed about COVID exposures is vital. Previously, schools had communicated for any case in the building. Moving forward, schools will communicate with parents and staff who have had an exposure or low-risk exposure to an individual and will provide details about next steps. After reviewing recommendations from local health officials and gaining feedback from parents and the community, the district will not communicate to an entire school building if there is a case, only to those who have had any contact with the individual (exposure or low-risk exposure.) This change is aligned with best practice.
Each week, the district updates the COVID-19 dashboard to provide a snapshot of the number of new cases and exclusions due to exposure for both students and staff. This is updated each Friday, typically in the afternoon, and can be found at https://www.olatheschools.org/Page/10754.
Parents interested in changing their child’s learning environment for second semester beginning January 2021 may do so between Oct. 26 and Nov. 6 at this link:
Please give careful consideration to the needs and learning mode that will best suit you and your child(ren) for the rest of the year knowing that the decision is a commitment through May of 2021. This learning environment change will go into effect when second semester begins on Jan. 6. Parents who want to continue with the same learning environment DO NOT need to fill out this form.

CST Virtual Tour!
Curbside Book Pick Up Extended !!
Curbside has been extended through this semester! Beginning Jan. 12th, it will be offered each Tuesday from 3:30-4:30pm. or anytime during school hours.
Students and families will be able to come up to school at that time and collect their books they have placed on hold and return any library books that are due back. It will be staffed by myself and staff volunteers. We will be outside in front of the main entrance and be ready to distribute books and collect books as needed at that time.

Welcome Parents to the 2020-21 School Year. A few suggestions to help us tackle attendance for your student(s) during this hybrid learning experience. Attendance is more crucial during these unprecedented times. We ask that you notify Chisholm Trail Attendance Office, preferably before 8:00am with your students all day absence. You can use any of the following methods of contacting us:

Due to remote learning, if your student checks out for an appointment, we ask for a second notification to Attendance (again via any of the 3 methods listed above) if student returns to learning with a time of return. Surface Go Tip
If students are unable to connect to WiFi (example: worked one day but not the other):
o Press and hold the Power button until the screen goes black (ignore the “swipe to shut down PC” option)
o Press Power button again
o Give it a minute to restart – this should “kick out” new updates to Surface Go
(Just another way to update!)
