MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL TODD CORSETTI
Our first-ever spring musical, Little Shop of Horrors, was a smashing success! The performances stand on their own merit, but they are made even more impressive by the youth of our cast. The future is indeed bright for our performing arts department as the theater department, band program, and choir program came together to give a thoroughly entertaining first-ever musical!
Thank you to all of our parents, guardians, and older siblings who have adjusted their drop-off times in the morning to ensure students are to school on time. Our tardies have slowed to a trickle thanks to your efforts. In addition, it helps a great deal if everyone dropping off is pulling all the way forward. This allows the turning lane traffic on 175th to unload more fully and decreases back up. We know with increased construction, housing, and more student drivers next year, we will all have to cooperate to make our morning drop off smooth.
The Principal’s Coffee occurs the third Friday of each month at 9:00AM in the Community Room. This is an informal opportunity to find out what’s new at Mountainside and/or to ask general questions. Our next Principal’s Coffee is Friday, April 20th.
If you have questions, you can reach me via email at: todd_corsetti@beaverton.k12.or.us
Sue Neeway is my amazing principal’s secretary, and she can be reached through the Mountainside Main Line at 503-356-3500 or by email at sue_neeway@beaverton.k12.or.us

STUDENT DRESS AND APPEARANCE
Now that spring has sprung and good weather is upon us, it’s a good time to remind our students about the district expectation around student dress and appearance. The general guidelines we follow are outlined in the District’s Student Family Handbook:
Dress and grooming are primary responsibilities of students and parents/guardians. However, students may be directed to change dress or grooming if it interferes with the learning process or school climate, is unclean, or threatens the health or safety of the student or others. Clothing, jewelry, or wording/graphics on clothing or on the person (e.g., tattoos) that is sexually suggestive, drug or alcohol-related, vulgar, which depicts violence, insulting, gang membership related, or ridicules a particular person or group may be prohibited.
Dress and grooming shall be in keeping with health, sanitary and safety practices.
1. When a student is participating in school activities, his/her dress and grooming shall not disrupt the performance or constitute a health threat to the individual or other students.
2. Dress and grooming standards may be established by school authorities as a requirement for participation in the school activity program.
3. Dress and grooming that disrupts the learning process shall not be permitted. Immodest attire may be disruptive. When immodest attire is considered disruptive, the student will be expected to alter the mode of dress.
4. Students shall not wear clothing, jewelry, emblems, badges, signs, tattoos or other symbols that are evidence of membership or affiliation in any gang.

The Beaverton School Board is proposing a 5-year Local Option Levy renewal that will appear on the May 15, 2018 ballot. If passed, the levy would allow Beaverton schools to retain 300 teaching positions, and maintain class sizes. Please refer to the links below for more information.

APRIL 3 IS ACT DAY!
The Beaverton School District will again provide ACT testing for all of its students in grades 9, 10, and 11. This year it will take place on Tuesday, April 3. On that day, at all high schools across the school district, freshmen will take the ACT Aspire test, sophomores will take the Pre-ACT test, and juniors will take the ACT Plus Writing college admissions test. At Mountainside, we will be giving the 9th and 10th grade tests. Please note that we will run a special schedule on the April 3 testing day, and regular classes will not meet.
Please read the grade-specific information below to learn more about the test that your student will take on April 3.

· This test tracks academic progress and student interests to help guide students toward college readiness.
· It is an online test that students will take using their Chromebook. Personal laptops cannot be used.
· Students will satisfy their Oregon Essential Skills in Reading and Math, which are graduation requirements, if they perform well enough in those areas of the test.
· ACT Aspire provides online resources to help students prepare to take this test, including practice questions. Encourage your student to explore these resources to begin preparing for the test: http://actaspire.pearson.com/exemplars.html
· On the April 3rd test day, freshmen need to bring their charged Chromebook, a pen or pencil, a calculator, and healthy snacks. Go to www.actstudent.org to see which calculators are permitted. Students must arrive no later than 8:00 A.M. Students arriving late will not be permitted to enter the test session and will need to return home.
Grade 10 Pre-ACT Test
· This test tracks academic progress and student interests to help guide students toward college readiness.
· This test helps prepare students to take the ACT Plus Writing test their junior year.
· Paper/pencil test.
· ACT provides online resources to help students prepare to take the test, including a practice test. Encourage your student to explore these resources to begin preparing for the test (the test prep for Pre-ACT and ACT Plus Writing is the same): http://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act.html

Things All Families Should Know
· Students should arrive to school rested and ready for a day of testing
· Regular breakfast and lunch will be served
· Please do not schedule appointments for that day. Once they start, students must finish the test in order for it to be scored. Students may not come and go during testing.
· Students will be in their advisory all day. Attendance will be taken for that class only.
· The 10th grade test ends at 12:45 PM. Students will be participating in various Advisory activities until 2:30 PM. If your student would like to leave early, please have your student bring a note excusing them to the attendance office no later than 2:30 PM on Monday, April 2. Please note: if your student is excused early, they must have their own way home as buses will leave at 2:38 PM.
· The 9th grade test lasts all day.
· Students can meet their Essential Skills for graduation through their scores on the 9th Grade Aspire test.
· The 10th grade Pre-ACT may be able to meet the Essential Skills for graduation, pending a decision from the State.
· We will not be providing calculators for students. They must bring them from home. See above for details.
· Cell phones and other electronic devices must be off and in student’s backpacks during the testing process. It would be best if they did not bring these items with them to school this day.
· Students who are disruptive or who refuse to test will need to be sent home. There are no extra staff for supervision.
· There is no make-up day for these tests.

Elections for 2018-2019!
Join the MPACT Board of Directors
We want YOU to be a member of our 2018-2019 MPACT Board! We’re looking for creative people who love to collaborate and help us further the goals and mission we created at the beginning of our first year. It’s an exciting opportunity to be in the front row in supporting our kids and our school.
We are in the early stages of pulling together a slate of candidates. Anyone can run for any position we have on the board. That said, there are a handful of our current board members who would like to continue to serve next year, as we are still such a new organization. Our Board is made up of a President, Vice President at Large, Secretary, Treasurer, two co-Volunteer Coordinators, two co-fundraisers, two for co-marketing and communications, and two co-concessions leads. What we know to date is that we will have positions to fill for volunteer coordinators, fundraising, concessions, and a treasurer.
MPACT will be holding a special general membership meeting on April 18 for the purpose of nominations. This gives incoming 9th grade families the opportunity to throw their name in the hat. Nominations can also be heard at the General Membership meeting in May. Voting will be held at the May General Membership meeting.
Mountainside Spring Community Event on April 11th
· Support our students competing in track, tennis, and softball.
· Enjoy some good food and entertainment from local restaurants and vendors.
· Peruse the school building and the grounds.
· Sporting events begin at 4pm. Mountainside High School building will be open to the community from 5:30 to 7:00 pm.
Seeking Community business or individuals interested in becoming a "Legacy Sponsor". A special reception will be held during the event for businesses and individuals who are committed to supporting Mountainside monetarily and want to learn more. Please contact Pam McKnight at Fundraising@mountainsidepact.org to learn more.
Excited about the event? We can use your help. Help is needed with pre-event, hands on the ground, apparel and concessions sales activities. Contact us at fundraising@mountainsidepact.org.
Concessions
Spring has sprung - and our Spring sports are off to a great start. Mountainside MPACT will be opening our Concession stand (near the baseball/softball fields) for Wednesday-Friday home JV events. Have fun, watch the games and help raise $ for future student events. No experience needed as we will provide brief training your first shift. Sign up here
Note: Students can sign up to volunteer at Mrs. O'Quinn's office in the Counseling Office. (If an event is changed or rained out we will notify you via email as soon as we can, but please know that some events may change at the last minute.)
For questions or more information contact us at Concessions@Mountainsidepact.org
Thanks,
Your MPACT Concession VPs
Jen H. and Rebecca F.
