NEWS FROM YOUR TEACHERS
ELA - Mrs. Marshall
Greetings! We have been working so hard this nine weeks on identifying and analyzing the theme of a text, reviewing parts of speech from elementary school, and determining the differences between a true sentence and a fragment. We will continue to work on these skills throughout the year, as every topic builds on the one before it.
Tuesday of this week we will be starting a new novel, Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen. It is an exciting text of a young boy who gets stranded alone in the Alaskan Wilderness and his story of survival. With this text, we will be delving deep into narrative story elements, plot, narrative writing, how a character develops and changes through a text, point of view and perspective, and figurative language. Students will be taking notes and completing assignments both in their journals and on Google Classroom. Please know that students can and are encouraged to take these journals home, but they are needed back at school daily.
A reading schedule will be going home with the students Tuesday of this week for Hatchet. It is tentative, but we hopefully will finish the book around Halloween.
Bell work THIS WEEK
We will be reviewing narrative writing techniques and mechanics, so bell work will be reflecting those topics. This week the students will be focusing on using quotations in dialogue correctly. That will start Tuesday in class this week and they will have a quiz over that on Friday. The practice packet will be coming home Tuesday. All bell work is done as a group in class, so students should leave with the correct answers, as I go over them in class.
Bell work NEXT WEEK
Next week will cover using commas appropriately. Same schedule - new topic covered throughout the week and quiz on Friday.
Reminder - Quizzes can be retaken throughout the 9 weeks.
