Notes from Principal Willette
Georgetown Central School
September 🍁🎃🍂
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Staff
Students are settling into routines and structures at school, and quickly making new friends. We celebrated our first community PBIS celebration last week, with a full school game of "Duck, Duck, Goose." Our older leaders helped our newest learners during this fun game. This year, we are focusing on building our community and acting in ways that are kind and show respect for one another. Our school environment is one that fosters a positive mindset in students. Throughout the year, we love to celebrate our students in different ways.
Our before and after school program has been a busy place during both the morning and afternoon. Thank you to our staff that provide this service to students and families on a daily basis. The students enjoy a flexible time to learn and socialize together before and after their regular school day.
After school enrichment clubs have also begun. Clubs include a weekly homework club, taekwondo, activity club, arts club, and hiking club. We have had great participation rates for our after school enrichment programs. If you would like to run a club or know an expert that could bring in some enrichment to Georgetown, please contact Sarah Mancini.
NWEA testing has begun for students in grades K-6. Over the next two weeks, students in grades K-6, will be completing the computer based test in reading and math, which is part of Maine's Comprehensive Assessment System. This information helps teachers understand student's areas of strength and growth in math and reading, allowing for differentiation of learning in the classroom. As students answer questions correctly or incorrectly, the test adapts to find their achievement level. To support your student/s to do their best, we encourage much needed sleep, a healthy breakfast, and encouragement from home for students to take their time and do their best.
We will also be conducting our reading assessment in grades 1-6, to gather information about what level students are reading at. Other assessments are happening daily in the classroom. The NWEA and BAS, act as universal screeners at Georgetown School. We encourage you to review all of the data sent home and reach out with any questions or concerns.
Student intervention or title one services for math and reading have begun. Intervention is a great way for us to target specific skills to ensure students are successful in meeting grade level benchmarks. Mrs.Morissette and Mrs.Willette provide title one services for students.
As we look towards October, we are excited to plan another Fall Festival on October 27th. We will also have a Halloween parade and dance party on October 31st. Students are able to wear costumes to school that day, but please no masks or face paint. Teachers love to celebrate Halloween as well and many join in the costume fun. To celebrate fall, the Georgetown Fire Department will be passing out pumpkins on October 26th; each student will come home with their own pumpkin to carve or decorate.
Our efforts to educate and holistically support your student/s only work with your support from home. Thank you for all your efforts at home. We thoroughly enjoy the brightness that these students bring to our daily lives.
Kind regards,
Nina Willette, Principal
