A Message from Mrs. Grosch
Hi MJ Families,
I wanted to take this opportunity to express my gratitiude for our teaching staff at Marion Jordan. I have observed staff go above and beyond to listen to students, empathize with their confusion and disbelief surrounding the recent school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, and provide comfort and reassurance that our school is safe. I extend my appreciation to you as parents as well. There is no way to fully grasp or comprehend what has happened, and certainly no way to even begin to explain the gravity and legitimate fear it instills in us as adults to our children. Thank you for all of the extra hugs, words of comfort, and support you have provided for your kids, your neighbor's kids, your student's classmates, and for one another. If you find yourself needing additional support or resources for your child (ren), we are here to help.
Each time an incident in a school occurs, it serves as an opportunity for us to review and improve our current practices and procedures. I am inclined to begin my next sentence with an apology for any inconveniece these practices may envoke, however, I know you know that these measures are for the safety of all, primarily your child(ren). As we look ahead to the final week of school, I want to reassure you of the following things:
- ALL doors of the school are locked and closed during the day. The only way for visitors to gain access is through our main entrance.
- All visitors need to sign into the front office and provide a driver's license or ID - this will include our visitors for both Field Day and our 6th Grade Farewell.
- Our office staff has been asked to greet visitors in our secured vestibule through the intercom system to determine why they are at the school and if they should be granted entry.
- We have many security procedures and protocols in place. Staff has gone through training and all staff and students have practiced routines for a variety of events. This information has been shared in age/developmentally appropriate ways with all of our students. Please ask your students to tell you what they do if the fire alarm goes off, a lockdown is called, or there is inclement weather in the area. Your conversations at home help your student to feel confident at school.
Teachers had the opportunity to learn more about the new math curriculum for grades K-5 and the new science curriculum for 6th grade on the recent Teacher Institute Day. Related Service Providers and Special Area Teachers attended sessions relevant to their specialized content. We are gearing up for enhanced, challenging, learning opportunities for our students next year.
I am hopeful that you have had an opportunity to attend a Moving D15 Forward information session. These sessions have presented an overview of some long needed district renovations to some of the aging facilities; and some exciting enhancements to our already sought after district. The perks of the plan for Marion Jordan include upgrades to HVAC, lighting, plumbing, restrooms, the parking lot and sidewalks, and enhanced accessibility. Additionally, an all day Kindergarten program would be offered along with a streamlined feeder pattern for our 5th graders to attend a newly constructed Thomas Jefferson Middle School for grades 6-8 and then move on to Fremd High School.
I wish you a summer filled with the sounds of a splashy pool, the scents of a BBQ grill, the sights of beautiful surroundings near and far, and the feeling of happiness associated with spending time with family and friends. To our 6th graders and any families not rejoining us in August, we bid you farewell and remind you that you will always have a place in our hearts and in the building as we do believe "once a Blue Jay, always a Blue Jay".
Fondly,
Jenny Grosch
Safe2Help Illinois
In the absence of a trusted adult, Safe2Help Illinois offers students a safe, confidential way in which to share information that might help prevent suicides, bullying, school violence or other threats to school safety. This program is not intended to suspend, expel, or punish students. Rather, the goal is to get students to 'Seek Help Before Harm.'
Safe2Help Illinois is a 24/7 program where students can use a free app, text/phone, website (Safe2HelpIllinois.com) and other social media platforms to report school safety issues in a confidential environment. Once vetted, the tips will immediately be shared with local school officials, mental health professionals and/or local law enforcement, depending on the nature of the tip. The program also will help local officials by connecting them with mental health resources or other appropriate resources to intervene and help students before they harm themselves or others.
