Raider Reporter
January 2023
Letter from the Principal
Dear Parents:
Happy start of 2023 and the beginning of our second semester of the 2022-2023 school year! I hope that you and your family had a wonderful holiday break and have had a productive and enjoyable month of January.
I hope your child’s first couple days of second semester is off to a good start. The beginning of second semester is an excellent opportunity for our students to have a new beginning and to make some resolutions for the upcoming semester. That may mean working a little harder on their schoolwork, being on time to class, getting involved in an extra-curricular activity, or eating healthier. Although the end of the school year is now closer than the beginning, please help our students make the most of their educational experience.
It is essential that parents and our school continue to work together to encourage and support our students’ success. There are several key components to student success at the high school and this includes students having very few absences and completion of all assignments. The majority of our students who are struggling academically are those students who have multiple missing assignments in a class. Please regularly check ParentVue to make sure all of your child’s assignments have been turned in and check nightly with them to see what homework they need to work on for that evening.
As a reminder for parents of current 11th grade students, the SAT testing day is not far away. The SAT will be administered to all 11th grade students on Wednesday, April 12th, as part of the three-part Michigan Merit Exam. It is not too early for our students to begin preparing for the SAT. The College Board, which conducts the SAT, recommends that students prepare for the SAT by studying for 30 minutes per day, twice a week. There are many online resources available, including SAT prep guides that can be found online or in bookstores. A College Board account is needed for all students. If your child does not have a College Board account set up, please do so at www.collegeboard.org . The student needs to be the one to set this up. Please do not set up a second account. This account is needed for PSAT9, PSAT10, and SAT review, score viewing, and score sending to colleges. Please have your child keep their login and password where they can find it as needed. These accounts are sometimes used during class time. If your child has already set up an account and cannot remember their login and password information, please call College Board at 1-866-756-7346. Our staff does not have access to students’ information.
On our SAT day, Wednesday, April 12th, 11th grade students are the only high school students who attend school. This would be a great day for current 12th grade students to schedule college visits or for 9th, 10th, and 12th grade students to schedule appointments. Using this open day will help eliminate class time missed.
As difficult as it is to believe, the scheduling process for the 2023-2024 school year will be in full swing in the next month. It is crucial that students and parents thoroughly discuss course selections, including choosing appropriate alternate classes in case a primary choice is unavailable. If students and their parents plan accordingly when selecting courses, the odds are better that the student will not have schedule issues in August. It is also very important that students consider their selections very carefully, as the number of sections that we run is based entirely on the number of students who request a specific course. While some scheduling conflicts are unavoidable due to conflicts of hours in which classes are offered or because a lack of enrollment for a class causes the class to be canceled, careful and thorough completion of the course selection process makes most of these conflicts fairly easy to resolve.
The Flushing High School staff and I would like to extend a special welcome to the parents of 8th grade students who are receiving the Raider Reporter for the first time. Over the next 18 weeks, many important events will take place directly impacting your child as an incoming freshman at Flushing High School next year. Please take the time to read the Raider Reporter carefully. I am excited about the arrival of the Class of 2027, and I look forward to working with you and your child to provide the best high school experience possible.
Sincerely,
Jason Melynchek
Principal
