SCMS Principal Update

Stuart Russ, SCMS Principal

Principal Update 9/6/19

Great Start!!!

  1. We had a great first week of school at SCMS. It was great watching students and staff interact and begin developing relationships that will have a positive impact on students and learning this school year.

  2. We have number of positive changes that are taking place at SCMS starting this school year. Some of these positive changes include Hawk Time (see below), increased intervention opportunities to meet the needs of struggling learners, and team teachers (math/science and ELA) at the 6th grade level, and 1:1 computing (see below).

  3. Hawk Time Defined: We are excited about the implementation of Hawk Time at SCMS this school year. Hawk Time is a daily, 30 minute enrichment/intervention period held during our 3rd period each day. The primary focus of Hawk Time will be on improving student achievement in reading and math. We will also utilize the time for social-emotional learning (SEL) and Hawk Way lessons.

  4. The primary tool students will use during Hawk Time is Exact Path. I have attached a document introducing you to Exact Path, and I will be sharing more information as we make our way through the school year. Students spent time this week working on the math and reading diagnostic tests for the product. We appreciate their efforts!

  5. Chromebooks were distributed on Wednesday. Parents, information about Chromebooks can be found under the Families tab of the district’s website. I have also attached a copy of the district’s Chromebook Handbook.

  6. Picture day is September 12th. Picture forms were distributed this week, and extra forms are available in the Visitor’s Center. You can also order pictures online at

  7. Please consider joining the SCMS PTO. The first PTO meeting will take place Wednesday, September 11th from 5:30 PM- 6:30 PM in the SCMS Commons. All parents are welcome!

  8. I want to thank everyone for a great start to the school year. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns. We are here to help. Let’s have a great 2019-2020 school year!
