Welcome To Meet The Teacher NIght:
Thoughts regarding the anticipation of the new school year.
This will be my 36th year of a "new dawn" with a new group of students, and I can honestly say the thrill of the day is still with me. In fact, it is a joy to get to do what one loves and is passionate about every single workday. There is no better feeling than that first period when you start out with "those jitters" of anticipation and after about ten minutes you look out into that sea of faces and you just know that you are where you belong to be - a sense of peace and excitement then replaces those jitters because it is in that moment that even though you still do not name each student by name and personality you know that by the end of the year you will and hopefully you have made some kind of impact/impression on their future existence - that is the true role of an educator.
This year I will be teaching both U.S. Government/Economics along with U.S.History. I want to start the year off with the importance that words matter because they do if we, as a society are going to be able to move past some of our differences and problems facing us today - it will be this generation that has that opportunity and hopefully will be able to do what generations before them have not been able to accomplish. It makes me proud to work with these young people and hopefully guide them to acknowledge it is possible to be the change-makers and truly make a difference in our society.
Each year, I select and maintain a theme which we use throughout the year - this year I have chosen the idea/concept of a "Learning Extravaganza" with emphasis on getting my students to learn, think, and create. I believe it is much more important to teach the skills one is going to need as they move forward in society than to solely concentrate on a bunch of facts that may or may not have an impact on their daily existence. Learning must be relevant and that is my goal or what I hope to strive for as we move forward in the year.
