School Attendance

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Our attendance for this week is 94.8%, which well just short of our 96% target. Let's hope that next week we'll meet it together.

We know that there's lots of bugs around because we've had staff illness too. However, please help us by sending your children to school when they only have sniffles. If they're not well enough to be here, we will send them home.

Our top attending class this week is Year 3 with 99.1%

A word from Mr Broom

If you're reading this now, you will have noticed that I've moved our weekly attendance report to the top of this newsletter. That's because I'm concerned as our attendance is below where we would expect it to be. I've thought about why and I can kind of get that we've had a warm winter and there's a lot of classroom illness around. However, there does seem to be a small number of pupils who are absent from school for the odd sniffle and cough and we have to emphasise the importance of being in school so that children can achieve. Let's hope next week sees a drastic improvement.

Meanwhile in school, there's been lots going on. Our Year 4's returned from their wonderful residential visit to Kingswood and the country dancing project in Reception is a real hit with some of our youngest children.

Yesterday, we had a visit from two senior primary leaders from Kirklees, who came to do a review on school. The were very quick to celebrate the wonderful things happening at Sherburn Hungate and especially made reference to the polite, well-mannered and exceptionally well-behaved children we have. That's in part down to you, so thank you for all that you do.

Have a lovely weekend.

Y4 Residential to Kingswood

We changed the usual Robin Hood's Bay trip to a visit to Kingswood Adventure Centre this year, and what a success it was. As you will see from the photos below, the children had an action packed, fun-filled time, learning things that we can't always deliver in the classroom.

A special thank you to Mrs Butterfield, Mrs Fitch, Mrs Middleton and Mr Browning for their incredible efforts to make this trip a huge success. It's not every day that you put in a 72 hour shift!

Well done to everyone who took part. The children were as always, a real credit to our school.

Year 1/2 Open Classrooms

We have had a great Spring Term learning all about dinosaurs and we would like to invite you to have a look at your children's work. We will be opening the doors to the Year 1 and Year 2 classrooms straight after school on Friday 12th April to give the children the opportunity to share their work with you. We thank you for your support throughout the term and look forward to seeing you on Friday.

Easter Bonnet Competition & Parade

It wouldn’t be Easter without an Easter Bonnet competition would it? This year, our entries will be judged by none other than Martyn Sibley, the STARMAT CEO, who will be making a special visit to Sherburn Hungate next Friday.

Children are invited to decorate a bonnet or hat with prizes for the best entries. The judging this year will take place on Friday 12th April, so all entries will need to be in school by Thursday 11th April.

Happy decorating and good luck!

Y2 Volunteer Readers Needed

We can't emphasise enough how important it is to read with children. For this reason, we're looking for some parent volunteers who may have an hour to spare to come and read with our Year 2 children. If you think you have the time, please call the school office for further information.
