November 2021
Message from the desk of Elizabeth Ihle
Dear VCMS Families,
As November comes to a close, there is much to be grateful for at Vickery Creek Middle School. To start, we are seeing fewer and fewer COVID cases which means more and more students and staff are at school learning together. November began with the return of our PTO sponsored Fall Festival, a huge success as it allowed our community to come together and play together. The PTO remained busy launching the Step It Up fundraiser they continued to promote through November 18th.
Veterans Day honored those who dedicate their lives to the service of our country. We had the pleasure to thank them as they drove through our campus. As a service endeavor, Mr. Lewsader himself dressed as a turkey and we collected over $500 and 44 turkeys to donate to The Place of Forsyth. All of these celebrations and traditions remind us how important it is for us to find ways to share moments we honor together. Athletics, clubs, and help sessions are all in full swing.
Book Fair is back! It is a welcome reminder that our Media Center truly represents a vibrant hub of learning and curiosity for all students and staff.
This month our Clubhouse recognized Native American Heritage Month through our morning announcements and is excited about our upcoming Children’s Illness Awareness Festival December 18th at Vickery Village. Students from multiple clubs are partnering with CHOA to raise money and learn more about the illnesses that impact children. The event begins at 2pm. Look for the flyer below for more information. We hope to see you there!
We continue to recognize ways students and teachers are building community through art this year as we post pictures on social media with the #InspireWestForsyth hashtag. Follow along!
Be sure to check our upcoming basketball games for both girls and boys. Games started the week before Thanksgiving break and our schedule is full! Our cheerleaders are working hard to promote spirit for these teams. We would love for you to come and support these student athletes.
I hope you were able to rest and rejuvenate over Thanksgiving Break spending time with those you treasure most. We have three weeks before the holiday break. It is a time to support your children as they prepare to finish quarter two strong academically. Viper Academy is each Thursday after school from 4:30 – 5:30. Students must sign up each week so we have exact numbers. This is one way your child can receive extra help to best prepare for upcoming assessments.
In closing, keep in mind that Mr. Feldkamp is still available to attend Homeowner Association meetings for subdivisions who reside in the Vickery Creek Middle School district. During these visits, he will share information about Vickery Creek Middle School and provide insight to middle school life. If you are an HOA board member (or know one) and would like to have him attend one of your monthly, semi-annual, or annual HOA meetings, please click on the link below.

FCA - Fellowship of Christian Athletes
Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has been thriving this year at VCMS. One Thursday morning each month, students are invited to a school-wide Huddle in the gym. Students have fun playing dodgeball and there are always plenty of donuts to eat. The last ten minutes of the Huddle we have an inspirational Christian message from a guest speaker. We’ve had a great turn out this year, averaging about 50 plus students each Huddle. Two youth leaders who work with Mrs. Crosby are Rocky Wyatt and Eric Helms. Rocky is a youth minister at Grace Chapel, and he has been working with FCA here at Vickery for at least ten years. New this year to VCMS is Eric Helms, former body builder and founder of Driven to Encourage Ministries. In addition to monthly Huddles, FCA has a bimonthly leadership meetings in Mrs. Crosby’s room for interested students.
Media Center
A HUGE thank-you to all those who helped make our first book fair in 2 years a great success!
PTO - thank you for helping to organize our fabulous volunteers as well as donating Blow Pops and prizes for our wildly successful Blow Pop board fundraiser.
THANK YOU to my two devoted volunteers Rosie Neyhouse and Dolores Mahn - your help in running our book fair (they were here EVERY DAY, ALL DAY!), as well as their support in running our media center on a weekly basis enable me to do so much for our VCMS students.
Finally, thank you to our VCMS students and their families for supporting our media program through Scholastic book purchases and participating in our Blow Pop Fundraiser.
All proceeds will be used to continually elevate our media center; creating a vibrant, fun, and welcoming space for all of our students. I hope our VCMS community had as much fun as I did during book fair week!
Best,
Lauren Tafuto
Read by Ms. Cathcart
This is a great memoir of an unlikely friendship between a homeless man who had worked on southern plantations and an international art dealer. I love character driven stories and this one is very well written.
Read by Ms. Macdonald
This book was a great fantasy about a girl who discovers she is magical (which is illegal in the supernatural world). She has to prove to everyone else that she is not evil because of her magical abilities while trying to figure out what happened to her older brother.
Read by Mr. Piper
Josh Waitzken, the main character of the chess book and movie "Searching for Bobby Fischer", was a dominant force in scholastic chess during the early 90's. However, when the movie came out the public pressure eventually got to him and his interest waned. After going through an identity crisis of sorts he decides in his late-teens to try the martial arts where he eventually becomes a world champion martial arts fighter. I love the book as he not only writes about his experiences but pays particular attention to his learning strategies and how he goes about getting "good"...in his case achieving excellence the seemingly different worlds of both chess and martial arts.

VCMS Student Council
Student Council hosted a fundraiser selling Dude Be Nice t-shirts just before Thanksgiving break. The funds raised will be going towards their Dude Be Nice Week budget! This will allow them to shower our community with random acts of kindness during DBN Week occurring 12/13 - 12/17. Students, staff and community leaders will be celebrated during this week of nice-ness. Memories will be made and hearts will be warmed! #DudeBeNice
