San Jose reopening updates, 7-16-20

San Jose Prep reopening plans, 7-16-20 edition

San Jose Prep Families,

The spring of 2020 brought about unprecedented changes to our society and our education system. As we look forward to the 2020-21 school year , we anticipate that SARS-CoV-2 – the virus that causes COVID-19 – will continue to circulate. Students, teachers, and other school staff will be at risk for transmitting and acquiring infection. It is important that everyone in the school community take steps to reduce transmission, particularly to those at high risk, while balancing the need to maintain a strong education system that effectively supports staff, students, and communities. San Jose Prep will be following the Governor's Executive order, as well as observing CDC recommendations and directives from the local health department.

San Jose Prep has created the following plan for the opening of the 2020-2021 school year. As we are directed by the state, this plan might change. As of right now, our San Jose Prep families should prepare to start school virtually on August 10th. Students will follow a bell schedule and log on to live classes taught by our San Jose Prep teachers. We will re-evaluate August 31st. Families can then choose to continue virtually or send their child to the brick and mortar school setting. Families may also switch from virtual to brick and mortar after every school quarter. Laptops will be provided if your student may need one.

For our new families, welcome to team storm and for our returning families we are so excited to welcome you back into the family!

If you should have any questions or concerns, please contact the Director of Enrollment, Fallon Scott,at

If you have a child also attending San Jose Primary, please look out for their reopening plan by July 22nd and for one of their staff members to contact you.

What will the school day look like beginning August 10?

San Jose Prep's first day of school will remain August 10. However, we will launch live virtual instruction. The school day will go as follows:

  • The school hours will be 8:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m.-1:00p.m. on Fridays
  • Students will be required to log on to each of their classes at their assigned time, just as they would during a normal school day in the building. We will be publishing the bell schedule on our website and students will receive their schedules in the coming weeks.
  • Attendance will be taken every class period!!! Students must be in attendance for the entire class period, just as they would in the brick and mortar building.
  • Classes will be live. Students will receive live instruction from their teachers and be able to interact virtually with teachers and peers.
  • Breakfast and lunch will be available for pick up every day. Logistics are currently being organized and details will be published soon.
  • Chromebooks will be available for checkout for students who need equipment for virtual instruction

We will re-evaluate the safety situation on August 31. If it is deemed safe to return to a brick and mortar setting, we will do so. Families may choose to remain on the live stream instructional model or to switch to our brick and mortar model.

For those choosing to switch to the brick and mortar model, there will be strict guidelines. Before students will be allowed to enter the building, a COVID waiver must be completed by a parent/guardian and on file with the school. A screening process, that includes a temperature check, will be conducted each morning in order to be admitted into the building. Temperature checks may be taken throughout the day as well to ensure that no student or staff member develops symptoms during the school day. Other CDC guidelines will be followed such as students sitting 6 feet apart from each other, the wearing facemasks WILL BE REQUIRED at all times, and the use of hand sanitizer and hand washing will be part of the daily routine. While lunch will continue to be part of the school day, students must eat in their classrooms as CDC guidelines do not recommend for lunch to be served in a cafeteria or other communal space. Please keep in mind that if your student produces a fever or any COVID symptoms during the school day, he or she will be isolated and required to be picked up immediately. The safety of our students and teachers is our number one concern. Classes will be conducted with strict social distancing guidelines.

Clubs and athletics

San Jose Prep will continue to have clubs and athletics for students. Whenever possible, meetings will be held virtually.

Should students have to meet face to face (i.e. athletic practices), we will be following strict COVID safety guidelines. Students involved in these activities will receive detailed information from their coaches prior to the start of the activity.

If you have any questions regarding athletics, please contact our athletic director, Mr. Drummond, at
