Reading and Writing
Students are immersed in the lengthy series of Tom and Eric, two time travelers. During this series, students record where the characters have traveled using Popplet, an iPad app. Much knowledge is gained about different time periods and historical figures. This series takes us to the end of Sig 2.
Genius Hour projects are the focus during writing time. Students select a topic of their choice to research and write about. Topics vary by the interests of each child. These reports are then shared with the class.
Math
During math, students have been learning about equal group stories (for multiplication and division). Acting out and drawing pictures helped students understand this new concept. Students also have had a chance to identify intersecting and perpendicular lines. Of course, we still review basic facts as we learn to learn how to do even bigger problems, such as 3 digit subtraction.
Social Studies and Science
Learning about history is fun; especially when we have a daily mystery item. This item is something that was once used and students have the opportunity to guess what the item was used for.
In Science students are learning about the states of matter. We have sorted items by properties and even predicted whether those items would sink or float.
For extra practice of vocabulary words, your child may practice on Zondle (Social Studies unit 5, Our Country Long Ago and in Science chapter 9, Looking at Matter).
Embryology
Coming back to school this week was "egg"citing for the students because they knew we were starting our embryology unit. A total of fifteen various types of eggs have been place in our incubator. The incubator has an egg turner that makes it easy to keep eggs warm. Students help add water to keep humidity regulated.
